Looking for input on 30-06 loads

Your experience with the featherweight mirrors mine. Those thin barrels can be frustrating to load for. I didn't get MOA or sub MOA groups with mine till I replaced the stock with a B&C Medalist. Take your accuracy load and run with it. Even now with a stock that free floats the barrel, my...

    Zastava M70 mauser Rifle?

I have a Zastava cz99 22LR rifle. It might have the nicest deepest bluing of any rifle I own. Once I figured out its feeding issues. It's a real good shooter. I tung oiled the stock some and tuned the trigger. I've handled the Zastava 70 at Cabela's. The stock is basic as noted, easily...

    Die choices....help.

I've pretty much gone to all Lee dies, but then I like them for their simplicity of set up and I'm not chasing match grade accuracy either. Still, with my factory hunting guns I can get them all to shoot at or below MOA, which I'm more than happy with. If I were starting over, I'd get the...

    280 Remington deer/pig bullet

Never shot a wild pig, but my featherweight shoots a mild RL19 140 gr Accubond load exceptionally well. I wouldn't hesitate to use 140 gr Sierra PH, or 139 gr interlocksl I think you'll find many of the suggested bullets will work. Buy a couple boxes to start and see what your gun likes.

    Bullet Pullers

I have the Hornady collet puller. It works fine. I think all the collet pullers work on the same basic concept. The collet the size of the bullet squeezes down on the bullet (in my case with a cam lever and with the Foster I think there's a t bar that screws down on the collet) and the...

Finally the GA Precision Creedmoor arrives

Beautiful gun, TackDriver. What does it weigh as you have it outfitted, if you know? Thanks. Be sure to post a range report. Bret

    243 neck splitting

I've had that happen with my 243 Ruger No. 1. Once or twice fired Fed cases. It only happened to a few cases, some would split as you seated the bullet. Never quite figured out how or why that happened . They were 5-10 year old cases, but I've reloaded 50 yr old military brass and not had...

    Stanley thermos.

One of my favorite things about early morning hunts, be it deer, duck, or turkey, is having a couple cups of coffee just after sunrise. One of my Stanley thermoses always makes the yearly deer stand pic.

    Hot Rut in Northern MN

My buddy got a nice 8 pointer on Mille Lacs WMA Saturday. The buck was right behind a good sized doe. On private land just East of there, I saw a medium sized doe, that was followed 10 minutes later by a 2.5 year old 6 or 8 point buck. Neither crossed to our property. Sunday deer did not...

    Freezer Filler Doe

Nice job. Congrats. I'm hoping to fill my doe tag next weekend.

    Reloading and chasing accuracy.

I fixed mine by getting a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock a few years ago. It's fully free floated, and is now consistent with loads it likes. I bedded the lug only on it. Not as pretty as the walnut featherweight, but much easier to shoot well i think. The featherweight stock always had...

    Reloading and chasing accuracy.

Those RSI's are nice guns, but I always wondered how they'd shoot. I would imagine that 165 hotcor load would do well on a cow elk. The gun would sure be handy in timber and easy to carry. My most frustrating gun to load for was my first, M70 featherweight 280 Rem. Those pencil barrels can...

    Wyoming elk hunt

Outstanding! Thanks for sharing your hunt. How do you like your Vanguard Backcountry? Just recently noticed that one and the very similar Wilderness model and would be interested to hear your thoughts on the gun. Thanks. Bret

    Sling swivel help....

Yep, those are the ones I was thinking of Bear. I was on Midway looking for something else yesterday and they have a set in the white for $13-14. I guess if I were using that style, I'd use machine screws and locknuts instead of screws on the front stud just to make certain it stayed put. I...

    28 Nosler Range report

You're under 1/2" at 100 yards. If that load consistently prints 1/2" or less, that's not just good enough to hunt with, it's outstanding. Load up a bunch and practice at various ranges and from hunting positions. Well done! You are good to go. Enjoy your hunt.

    Sling swivel help....

You could also have Model 70 super grade style studs installed. Wish I could paste a picture, but they are the type that are usually inletted into the stock and secured with two screws, one on either side of the stud. That might be more secure. Those cup style ones on bear's stock look...

    Opening Day Success

Well done Guy! A little Brownell's Oxpho-blue cold bluing will fix that bolt up good as new. I had to do quite a bit of it on my project Mauser last winter and was really impressed with how easy and how well it worked. Heating up the metal seems to help too. Or sometimes I had to do 2-3...

    Keeping targets

I still use a 3 ring binder. My wife has scrap booking for a hobby, and I have a huge 3 ring binder with load notes and saved targets. For a while Target stores used to have one side of their paper grocery bags full of small 1" Target symbols. Those worked very well at the range, and while...

    Loads for upcoming deer season.

Is the 30-06 based on a 98 or a 96? I have a 96 Swede in 6.5x55, and the original trigger (from 1908) is awful. Mine is a 98 action made in 1945. The original trigger wasn't terrible, but the Timney for the Mauser w/o safety was only $50 or so. It is a great trigger. I have retained the...
