A great read thank you. I imagine this will be relived around many future campfires. Tough hunting conditions and would have been very easy to not persevere. Well done
It seems to be an American debate. The whelen really doesn’t mean too much this side of the lake. The 9.3x62 would be more common with factory loads and good quality brass available. By saying more common, it is still relatively obscure compared to a whole bunch of other cartridges that do...
I have that same scope on my 7mm08 too. That firedot is great in low light conditions. Varget has been my go to powder with the 7mm08 and 140 class bullets. You should be able to get 2,800fps easily with that combo. If I’d owned that cartridge earlier, there would probably be a few less rifles...
That was the same load we used in the 22.250 as kids growing up. It was dynamite on goats in the hills. More recently we have used the same bulllet in our 223’s and it has worked a treat on smaller feral pigs and once on a yearling red with a neck shot. We can buy them here in a “super roo” pack...
I would be a couple of hundred for most. It doesn’t limit my practice this way and is good for pre hunt range sessions. However with the price of components these days, that regime may change.
What sort of speed were you achieving with that load. I didn’t even know there was a 70grain accubond in.224. Thanks for the heads up, looks like a great bullet.
I bet you can’t buy them at the same price 😜
Great shooting too, don’t see many 7mm Mauser improved cartridges getting around. I’d be interested to know more about it.
It is for that reason I shoot the 120nbt in my 260rem and have never once thought I need a 140 grain sized bullet. When I think I need a 140 grain sized bullet, I grab a bigger rifle. That bullet has been an outstanding game producer in that cartridge.
We load for a couple of 270’s and have had great results with the Speer 130 sbt a cheap bullet but more than capable for goats, pigs, deer in Australia and a good range bullet for practice. The SST’s by hornady also work well as have the game kings and ballistic tips in that 130 grain weight. We...
Great shooting and sorry to hear of your Grandpa's passing. Reckon by this time next year his old 30/06 will be snug in your shoulder and there will be another deer at your feet.
