That sounds like a great set-up! I am leaning, heavily, towards a SS Ruger (today!). I met Bob Hart a few years ago in a hunting camp in Maine. Very friendly, very nice fella. We tossed back a few and had a good time for 3-4 days.
I had a M700C in .35W bought NIB back in about '90 or '91. Nice rifle, but I sold it maybe two years ago. Still waffling over the M70, M77 or M98 decision for the next (last?) one...... :?
I bought both a 2.5-8x32 and the ever-popular 1.8-5.5x38 Conquest when I saw them on close-out a few years ago. The 1.8-5.5 was a great partner to the CZ FS in 9.3x62 I originally put it on. It now lives atop my M77/.338 Fed, after selling the CZ. The 2.5-8x32 is biding time mounted on an old...
You're right about that "quick to operate" bit Scotty. I've seen some video clips of shooting boars in Europe where the Blaser is, of course, a very popular rifle for hunters. The flick-flick of a practiced shooter working that action from the shoulder for additional shots on running boars is...
The nicest Sako I've ever seen or handled is a Sako High Power Mauser version from the '50s. I saw one and had to have it and that Sako .270 still sits in my cabinet. Congrats on your fine looking Sako!!
Stock fits me fine, I love the guns and also own a 7/08 FW Classic, along with a pre '64 .270. I'm a bit concerned that a medium contour barrel might not be a good fit where a FW contour used to live. I'm also a tad reluctant to use a stock without a cross-bolt with full-house Whelen loads(?)...
Thanks for the pep talk fellas. I knew immediately it was priced way below market, but apperently, I wasn't the only one. Wonder if a clerk at Cabelas will be toting home a new rifle tonight?? I needed another rifle, even another pre '64 like I need a hole in my head. But, I simply...
I know it's still a little early, but it is a Sunday and I am broken-hearted! I was doing my normal "new today" searches on both GunsAmerica and Guns International when something caught my eye. I waited perhaps 5 mins wondering if I should check with the wife before buying (she's out shopping...
For those who will search the woods with only one rifle, I might, on some level, admire you. But, that has never been my style (perhaps wish it was that easy tho). I will be starting the fall seasons with a bear hunt in Maine. A 9.3x74R double rifle will be in my lap and a 45-70 GG will also be...
Scotty, I am still undecided as to what I'm going to do, for one last Whelen. I have a M70 in '06 that has never been a really good shooter, that has tempted me something awful. However, it's a newer FW version and I just don't know if the stock would work well. I also have a nice sporterized...
Scotty, I'd bet your son would love a .338F! I have found it to be my favorite (lately) B/A deer rifle. I bought a SS Hawkeye in .358 after the .338 and am glad I did since Ruger has quit making both now. I did take the Tupperware stock off the .358 as well, but still wish I had the $$ for an...
Very nice! Your experience with the Fusions mirrors my own with my SS Hawkeye in .338F. I have also harvested one Ky buck with the fusions and they worked as good as one would expect, full penetration and 1.5" exit hole. limited testing with the 180gr Accubonds did not show me quite as good...

I've looked at your answer for about 3 days now and finally decided that I should, indeed, answer to it. If someone wants to stand behind a ballistics calculator and quote...
I'd simply say this.... I've owned a .338/06 and it's a great round; very close to .35 Whelen specs. But I've yet to find from numbers I've seen where it's any better at any weight bullet of 180gr & above to make make me choose it over the Whelen. Perhaps the .338 fed might be what you want, if...
That should make a very fine purchase without a doubt. Although I no longer own a Kimber, they are fine rifles. I am a big fan of the .338 Fed and along with the Montana, it should be a very light & useful combination, without a doubt!
Prolly. But I'd reserve my opinion to that of a 400 lb sow. I have seen the difference between a sow that big (nearly) and a boar, bigger than that. I am sure that the 300gr PT would take that hog, sow or boar, but full penetration through both shoulders & shields...I dunno... :?

I think there will be a rifle or two ready, when he is. That little bugger got his mitts on three nice deer last year as a 2 yr old. My Tn M/L 8 pnt, just a week prior and his Dad's big M/L 8 pnt a few days after that one and the Ky buck above....lol! I can tell you that I was a heck of a lot...
