Pat,
I'm so glad your little one is OK and sorry you had to end your hunt abruptly. The absolute right call was made and believe me, this hunt was not a waste of time. You know the area better and those bucks/bulls will only be a year older!
At least 20 rounds but, no more than 40. You never know, maybe you'll bump the scope and want to re-zero.... I like to carry only a few in the field for whitetail but have learned to carry more for elk.......... :>)
I always take two rifles as well.
I love that open undulating landscape when grass turns golden. Something about it in the Fall when the air is crisp and clear. What a perfect day to be out there Guy! Glad you were successful and were able to get a nap in! :>)
It's just my thinking that I would not screw with what is working now especially if you are happy how that rifle is presently performing. There is an old saying.......... "the enemy of good is better".............
I'd consider a new one designed specifically for long range stuff! :>)
I always enjoy when folks actually say what they wish or mean to say. Clarity over agreement. Anyway, it's a better world or forum when different points of view can be heard and are willing to be heard. It used to be that "we" never expected to agree with everyone or heard only what we wanted...
Mostly Texas which has many regions. A little in the east, some in the west, plenty in the panhandle and tons in the hill country & trans pacos.
Also have hunted both eastern and western Oklahoma and Colorado. So far Colorado on the west side and going to the north west corner this week...
I love hunting alone. Hunting with others is probably more fun and I do like hunting trips with my friends probably the best. That said doing it by yourself is very satisfying. Up till the point when it is time to get that animal out then it sucks! :>)
This reminds me of when my brother and I were in my grandfather's words...." little S____'s"......... anyway, we were 4 years old and we would visit them on the ranch often. Once while riding around one evening we see this bull doing what bulls do....................... "Papaw!" (what we...
Elk.......................... 340 wby with 240 grain N.F. hand loads to 3027 fps.
mule deer..................300 wby with factory 180 grain SP's
whitetail.................... 7x57 with hand loaded 140 grain AB's
Thanks guys,
I'm going with a friend I grew up with and have hunted with him quite a bit. We hunted together on my other elk hunts. This hunt is with an outfitter on a combination of private and public land. It ought to be good hunting with plenty of land to use with limited pressure. We're...
Looks like Fotis won't be the only one taking a .340 on an elk hunt this year. :>)
I'm headed up for 2nd season to Western Colorado about 25 miles west of where Tom will by for 1st rifle. Knowing him he'll be hiking all over the place so if I see his tracks on my side of that mountain range...

On my 2nd elk hunt I was with a good friend and we were lucky to end up taking two nice bulls at the same time. The super short version was we saw a bull headed over a hill and we gave pursuit. Crawling to the top of the ridge there were two bulls and one cow. We set up at with me...
