LRH is NOT done with an 8 pound rifle. Bring the weight up to 12 to 15 + pounds and the recoil would get your attention but would not hurt you too bad.
ETA: Come on Bob, give Ray Weller a 300 grainer!
I've had experiance with the Berger 6.5mm 140g VLD only. I quit using them when they disintigrated within 40 yards of the muzzle when pushed over 3100 fps in a 1:8 twist 264 Winmag.
The 142g SMK does fine at 3200 fps.
Decades ago Kapok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapok) was recommended as a filler.
I've had luck with a small bit of tissue or toilet paper over the powder.
In my experience, the 40 grain BT is not effective beyond 150 yards. Any 'yote hit over that is likely to keep on going and not to be found even though it will be dead soon. Go with a heavier bullet.

"I'm going to try 4831 with a bunch of lighter bullets for some late season varmint blasting."
If you like 4350 for 100's plus, why go to a slower powder (4831) for lighter bullets?
Pop-
You gotta re-think this a bit.
How about: Use 1 gun with 1 bullet to do 1 job. If you want to do any other job, you get another gun! :P
The 110g AB over H4831 or H1000 will save the pelt of a 'yote and give the smack down to any goat. And, with a BC of .418, it will go almost as...
I've had Berger VLD's blowup within 40 yards of the muzzle. I switched to SMK's and never had the problem. If you REALLY want to try some long range stuff give this guy an e-mail:

Decades ago, Shooting Times magazine did an article that contained a experiment on rifle barrel length vs speed. I believe Wooters (sp) wrote it. Several rifle barrels 20-26 inches long were chrono'ed then cut down an inch and chrono'ed again. This went on until all barrels were about 16...
I went to the Shooter's Pro Shop this morning and they have zero 223 60g BT seconds. Not even a cubbyhole for them. Also, seemed there were more empty cubbyholes then full for seconds. Hope they start their run on varmint bullets soon. I need something to do once the snow starts flying. 8)
"They are just starting to ship!
Should be on the dealers shelves soon."
Damn! 60g BT seconds aren't even listed on the Nosler Shooter's Pro Shop website.
Time for a 5 mile road trip.
All right Nolser!
I've been shooting the 60g V-max for years in a 223 V/T AR and Ruger V/T 22-250 AI for varmints only because Nosler did not make any. I will love the additional BC. The V-max is a flat base.
When is the due date (forgive me if its listed above)?

Sounds good on the Mauser. However, most 6.5/284's top out around 2950 fsp for a 140/142grainer in a 1:8 twist. Even the 6.5mm WSM will not go much over 3150fps. If you want to go faster, use a larger case.

Just FYI-
I currently run a 264 WinMag at a very comfortable 3200 fps for an SMK 142 grainer in a 1:8 twist, 28 inch barrel using H50BMG. I know of a 260 Weller (7mm Dakota necked down to 6.5mm) that will do 3400 fps with a 140 grain NP using a 28 inch barrel and AA8700. Also...
Here is a reference point.
142g SMK, 69g Retumbo, CCI250 primer.
Handloader mag from a few years ago had loads. Maybe someone will offer up some more data.
Retumbo is probably too slow for 120g bullets. RL22 might be better.
The early (pre-warning, tang safety) M77's have adjustable triggers. I think the origional manuals had the details. Otherwise, a gunsmith or a replacement is needed.
