Even with all the options out there. A bolt action in 308 win with a 21" barrel could do all my deer and bear hunting with 165 grain bullet like the PT. The VX6 1-6 would be a fine single scope, or a VX3 1.5-5 & a VX3 2.5-8 on QD rings.
The 308 win is a fine cartridge.
I have CZ527 in 22-hornet it is pretty low for noise, a 221 in a 24" barrel not much differance between it and my 223 for noise. I think you need a 19 badger from james cahoon it is smack between the K-hornet and the 221 for noise and has 223 ballitics. I think it is the perfect p-dog cartridge...
It depends on the cartridge and distance one will be shooting. You pointed out the 30-06/180gr but here is some other things to think about.
My 35rem/200gr @ 2188 fps is set to 1" at 100 yards reason is this will not be too high at 15 yards even from a tree stand yet work just fine for a 200...
300 H&H, If I only had one rifle to hunt say MI & ONT mainly deer bear. It could be 21" barreled bolt in 308win. But it would have QD rings and two scopes. A VX3i 1.5-5 for close up in thick cover 10-30 yards but will handle 250 if needed. And a VX3i 2.5-8 for say 100 yards and further in more...
I did order a VX3i-2.5-8x36mm so my oridginal plan is still working. Desided to also get the VX3 1.5-5x20mm for the sale price of $299. Gone same as the old VX3 2.5-8. Wish I was a week earlier. But the new VX3i will be nice. My whelen is a 7600 and the 20mm just looks better on it but the VX2...
I had a 700 short action classic rebarrel with a Shilen #3 in 358Win. Very happy they did everything squared up the action, pillar bedded it and free floated. Mine is blued so I have a 700 classic in 358win but match grade. Back before you could get a Ruger in 358win or the 338 fed was invented.
Per Sierra's manual some of their HP are tuffer than their spitzers. The 140gr .277 for example. I think their both prohunter bullets. Likely the same for 165gr .308's.
I finally desided its time to up grade from a 16 year old VX2 2-7x33mm to a new VX3 2.5-8x36mm. The VX2 will go to my scope less 35 Whelen which should be a good fit. Its VX3 1.5-5x20mm went to my 700/358win when it was built.
Surpised Cabelas does not carry it. I will check with my local gun...
Win 3" HS Hull
WIn 209 primer
Rem SP410 Wad
17.0 grs 300MP
11/16 oz #8 Mag Shot
1225 fps 9,200 psi
Absolutly the best load for sporting clays, quail, wood cock , & grouse. Great pattern density. With the extra 100 fps and pattern density this out performs ammo with #7.5 out to 30 yards. Which...
The Rem 870's 12 & 20 gauge fit me perfect, and so does the Berretta's. When shoudered aim looking strait down the barrel. They hit where I point them its just the brain to trigger finger that requires practice. Also the CZ410 SxS seem to fit great too. I aim lucky there though I have shouldered...
There is not a electronic scale I can aford that I trust. The tranducer blank machined and heat treated alone would be over $1,000. That is why laboritory electronic scales cost a few thousend or more. I have seen the insides of a few electronic scales. A single bridge, super glued, and crewdley...
Right from Alliant. Fit is perfect and it works great. 308 pellets with #8 and about 265 of #7.5. Great load for clays, and grouse or smaller birds out to say 35 yards. Ya I have drop many birds with or with out feathers at 40 yards too. And that would be a second shot with the tighter choke. I...
It took 25 years of working to get ahead enough to buy my first U/O. I am hooked they are works of art. Mine are field grade and sub-gauge because I hunt mainly grouse, woodcock, and quail with shots from 10 to 35 yards most of the time.
Guy seen your post on pheasant & chukar well done.
My...
Besides reloading for center fire rifles I shoot clays twice a week for fun in the warm months. I reload shotgun ammo for target and hunting. Seems like there should be more guys that also shoot shotguns and reload for them. Maybe I should share some of my loads in the future?

The CD is far more important to smaller calibers than it is to larger cals as long as enough bullet is used. Just compare a few .458 bullets CD to that of the 250 gr .338. I do not have a manual in front of me but a tuff 350gr 458 will impress any bear yet its CD is much less. If both the...
I just noticed that Federal has a new .338 185gr Fussion bullet out, at least in 338FED ammo in their MR_ (something) line. So there is two bullets designed specificaly for the 338 FED the 185gr & 200gr Fussion.
I went with a 3-groove in my 221REM. Seems to shoot fine thou its new and I have...
A limbsaver came on my TC muzzle loader and it melts carpet, other plastic and sticks to card stock I put under it to keep it from melting the safes carpet.
The recoil pad is now sticky and gooy. I have a pacmar on a medalist stock and love it. How ever its on a rem 700 in 223 so its not needed...
My 7600-35 Whelen is sitting bare of shights, robbed its VX3 1.5-5 to put on my 700-358 Win. When I get taxes back I think a VX3 2.5-8 is what I will buy. To put on my 270 Win and its VX2 2-7 will work nicely for the Whelen.
Let me know if you find a prefit pacmar, thats what I would like on...
