Whats the plan for 4166?
35 whelen, 358 Win, 35 Rem, 270Win, 223 Rem, 221Rem, 22 Hornet. Four of these could use the same powder and I always looking for that over achever for the 358win. TAC & IMR8208 are two I have looked at.
I heard some thing about IMR8208 is very simular to H4895 like its the short cut version. I wonder if it will work any where H4895 does? I use H4895 in my 35rem and 358win. Have yet hand loaded my 35 Whelen but it would be nice to have one powder for all three. When I do load my whelen I think I...
I have taken 3 bucks with the old 200gr CLSP in factory rem ammo. Two went completey through, and one broke the far shoulder blade and was resting just in side the hide. The new CLSP's are fare pointier than the hornady spire point. I have some of the new ones but their cannlered high for the...
I have run both Tac and H4895 with 225gr Sierra, Partition, and Hawk RT/.030" jacketed. Took a small 8-point with the Hawk which with the .030" jacket is auh some on deer. The Speer 220gr could be my go to bullet for deer at 2450fps.
I am mixed on the 200gr horady spire point took two buck but...
Took my three deer rifles out to sight in for Nov 15 deer opener. After a fowling shot in to the dirt bank with my 358win with 225gr PT's the next three shots centered the bulls eye at 100 yards with a 1.3" group (done). Next was my 336D 35 rem and the 200gr CLRN's at 2188fps printed 3/4" high...
First the 200gr Core Lokt Soft point is a round nosed bullet and it was designed for the 35rem. It actual just come to its own at 2100fps to 2300fps. It is very rebust and for deer works fine in the 358win at 2500fps. The 200gr Core Lokt Pointed is a completely different bullet designed for the...
Hawk makes a good bullet, and with different jacket thickneses. I used a 225gr RT with .030" jacket in my 358Win and it work great on white tails. I might go to a .035" jacket if elk were the goal.
Still looking for a 220-225gr bullet that designed for the 358win and 350rem. A 220gr solid base bonded would fit that bill, a simple spitzer or protected point. Designed with deer as its main goal fast to expand and cost effective.
We have the 225gr partition for bear elk moose etc. I have to...
What about a 44mag with a sabot for 358", or any larger strait walled cartidge thats 1.8"?
Than a bolt action rifled barrel shot guns pretty nice too. Was not some here 410 shot shell case with 45 cal bolts in a rifled barrel and it was basicly mild 45-70?
A Marlin 336D wearing VXI 1-4x20mm tossing 200gr CLRN's at 2188fps works very well out to 200 yards. This is my choice when shots are expected to be 10-125 yards. The 220gr speer over a stuffed case of LVR would be my choice for elk or moose.
Some good powder are H4895, TAC, & LVR.
I use this in my 410 for high velocity loads with very low pressure. So its got me wondering if anyone has used it in small cartridges like the 22 Hornet or Fire ball? Or the 17 caliber versions of these? Its a magnum pistol powder like some of the other powders that work well in small cases.
24.9grs of benchmark has been my 52gr A-max & Berger HPV load. Just saw about 6 1 lbs cans of it on a shelf saturday along with most rifle powders even 4lbs jugs like IMR/H4350 4831. Long shot sems to be the one shotgun powder in stock saw 4 4lbs there.

Have you tried 8280 in smaller 35 cartridges? I load the 35 rem, 358 Win, and soon the 35 Whelen. H4895 or TAC works in the smaller two, but using just one powder for all three would be nice. After that I have a 223rem(benchmark) and 221rem (h4198) and in a pinch it may work fine for...
If it were me building a nice woods rifle for handling in 308win. I would be a 700 SA with a a standard counter barrel 21" long ( a#2 in a Shilen) and it would most likely wear a VXIII 1.5-5. A VXIII 1.75-6 is a great and over looked scope as well for woods type hunting. Mine wears a VXIII 1.5-5...
What you my loose is the balance and feel of the M7 with its 20" barrel.
For what it worth I have a 700 short action rebarrel to 358win with a 20.5" barrel. I could deside on 20" or 21" so I split the differance. If I did it over I would go with a 21" barrel. I also have a marlin 336D 35rem in...
I think I will go with Pac-nor, I have time. The used rifle I bought shoots OK but not as good as my other 22 CF's and the chamber seems big and the throat very long. So I think its time for a match grade barrel. I will see what groove and twist they recomment for the fire ball. Plus they will...
For the cartridges I partial size I set the dies to zero and the use shims under the locking ring to move the die up a known distance. I do not want to bump the shoulder and can see on the case neck where the die stopped. I keep the shim information in the die box and if I ever need to decrease...
