I just traded a couple of 223 rifles that had sat in the back of the safe for to long on a pair of Ruger American Predator rifles in 22-250. I haven't prairie dog hunted in years which is what the 223's mainly were used for. I do most of the haying now on the ranch and just can't get away that...
I'm in the process of returning two VX-6 scopes to Leupold due to tracking issues. I agree they make a good standard scope but I'm disappointed with the return to zero on the CDS.
I've been shooting the 264 win mag with a pretty mild load (140gr Berger at 2914fps) for quite a few years for these reasons Guy. It was my attempt to hit those goals before everything today was available. It works well enough I'm going to stick with it too!
I have one of those rests also for...
I have used a lot, but these are the ones I use with any regularity anymore.
22 magnum. I don't do a lot of small game hunting so it's mostly small varmints I use this on.
204 Ruger I had one built that shoots the 45gr Hornady SP or the 40gr V max very well. I mostly shoot the heavier...
I got around to weighing the E tip. It weighed 179 grains, started out at 180grains. It must not have lost anything but the plastic tip. Maybe it added a little bit of deer and lost a bit more, but either way it did extremely well.
I used to shoot the old 25-06 700 I had with factory Winchester 90gr PEP ammo. A fair number of my friends have shot 25-06 rifles for deer for years. They seem to drop deer as fast as anything with good shot placement. I've seen quite a few fall to 100gr Sierra Gameking or Nosler Ballistic...
This barrel has over a hundred rounds down it, between break-in, a little playing with loads, and factory stuff. It's probably closer to 150 now so it should be running as fast as it will. It was cryo-accurized too so it should be pretty smooth.
Got back to loading and shooting the 25-06...
Copied and pasted this from my file on my computer from working up loads for my 24" barrel 25-06:
Swift 100gr Scirocco 2 54.5gr H4831SC .5” group of 4 shots, then 1.5” group of 3 shots with chronograph attached to barrel. Velocities 3225, 3158, 3179 fps. Avg 3187. Third group with chronograph...
I just got a box of the 90gr Sierra Gamechanger bullets to try in my 243. They don't have quite the BC of the others, but .490 in a 90gr is nothing to laugh at either. Might be worth a shot in the Creedmoor too.
Thanks, that will help! I'm using several reloading manuals to find a safe starting place and going from there. The Sierra book's max loads looks to be well below the older Nosler and Hornady books I had.
Well I made an improvement. Since the IMR 4350 was still in the powder scale/dropper I...
Just got back in from trying the 117gr Sierra Gameking over 51 and 52gr of RL 22. That was a mild load from some books, nearer to max from the Sierra book. 3 shots over the chronograph with the hotter load averaged 2772fps with an SD of 20.3. The 3 I shot without the Magnetospeed attached to...
I have been working on some handloads for my 25-06. I burned out the barrel in my Dad's old 670 Winchester 243. The 670 is pretty much a lower end push feed 70 that used a long action for everything. Anyway after burning out the barrel I decided to fix up the old rifle and had it re-built with...
I'd say that's for sure! I seem to either be using a little gun with a light bullet that doesn't exit and leaves no blood trail, or a big enough one that even on a slightly off shot they drop in their tracks.
My Dad and Uncle remember those days, before Kansas had deer.
Kansas isn't what it was a few years ago. The EHD outbreak in 2012 hit our area hard and we lost a lot of great genetics. The age class is recovering, but the older bucks aren't what they were. The increase in popularity and...
One thing I forgot to add, this set-up is pricey but the best gun or optics in the world are much less effective if they cannot be held as steady as possible. This piece of the system is as important for both uses as any!
I've used a Promaster 525 tripod with an Outdoorsmans pan head for the last few years. I also had an Outdoorsmans compact medium tripod for a while but ended up selling it. It was a great tripod but having one tripod that was only a few ounces heavier that got me to standing height shooting or...
