Thanks for the story. I'm flying out next Monday for my AK moose hunt, I hope my 300WM and 180gr E tip get tested on a moose. I'll have a story to tell of excitement and misery I hope!
Just read this on another forum and confirmed it on Kuiu's website. I don't know any more details. Lots of rumors on the other forums that it was suicide and occurred on a sheep hunt but I don't know anything for sure. I hope that isn't the case for the family. Just figured I'd let people...
I think I'd be ok with the big areas like others discussed that let animals act normally. I don't see much sport in hunting where the animal doesn't have a decent chance of avoiding me. I've read stories about big whitetail in thickly vegetated high fence areas of decent size that get so good...
For the AK moose trip I'll be packing my Rifles Inc Lightweight 70 in 300 win mag. It has a 3-12x Huskemaw scope now. I decided to try some factory Nosler 180gr E tip ammo and it averages .75" groups in both my and my friend who is going on the trip's rifles. My gun shoots plenty of groups...
I'm a big 264 win mag fan and have been for a while. My old one has decorated my house for me. I have used the 140 Accubond and 140 Berger with good results from both. I don't push my old one to hard, 60gr of H4831SC pushes the Berger at 2914fps with great consistency and accuracy. It shoots...
Gotta love the 264! My favorite. I'd personally lean toward the 140 Accubond but don't see any reason why the 130 wouldn't work just as well. I've just seen how far those 140's will penetrate on tough angles and like them. Good luck on the hunt.
Thanks for the update and sorry to hear that. I too hope to get on a caribou hunt in the next few years.
I'm going on my first AK trip for moose next month and hope to get a Kodiak Sitka black tail hunt and caribou hunt pulled off in the next 5 years. Right now with both Dad and I on the...
I can cut it to 3 if I really wanted to. I would need a 22 in addition to these, but everybody has a 22 and a 12 gauge right?
Quality 20" AR in 223 for predators. I like a little more speed for a little more shock but I could get by with it. I could buy the cheaper reman stuff that's loaded...
I like a light rifle in the mountains. My 300WM weighs right at 8lbs now with scope and sling. Not a featherweight, but not heavy.
For flat land I like a heavier rifle. Both my 264 win mags are heavier, my lighter one is about 10.5lbs with scope and sling and my heavy barreled one with the...
I agree the 25-06 would work. A friend who has killed a pile of elk did so with a 270 and 130gr Winchester Power Point bullets. A tougher bullet from the 25-06 would perform at least as well. Just be picky on shot angle and range.
If you are worried about it I'd get the 270. If I got the...
Wow I didn't spot your question for a while.
Accuracy and consistency are great. I have taken one other deer, a doe at 321yds. I hit her quartering to me at a fairly steep downhill angle at last light on the last day of doe season. I waited to get the broadside shot I wanted, she just never...
I take an Otis kit stripped down with only the tools I need for the calibers I have along. I stick a small lens cloth and the Torx or Allen wrenches my rifles scope mounts take in the kit also. The truck has more tools in it's toolbox full time if I need more.
I do the vast majority of my glassing in the field from binos on a tripod. When I'm real weight conscious I use my 10X Leica Geovid HD-B binos with an adapter plate and strap mount for my tripod head. A lot of the time I'll pack the extra weight of 15x Swaros and glass with them off the...
Good luck on the hunt.
If you end up doing a 2019 or 2020 trip I would be willing to loan you some gear if I'm not using it at that time. I think 2019 will be a WY elk hunt staying at a friends place where I won't need the AK stuff and 2020 might be a November Sitka Blacktail hunt...
I shot a whitetail buck in the shoulder with a 143gr ELD-X from my 264 win mag. Impact velocity was 3000fps and it came apart. The buck died on the spot but I didn't find any pieced of the bullet big enough to recover. It shoots great but doesn't seem anywhere near as tough as the Accubond...
They still have grass like that in a lot of areas, helped a neighbor burn a section of it today. A lot of the Flint Hills still gets burned every spring to get rid of the old growth and get the new stuff a good start. The Flint Hills would be all trees if not for the controlled burns every 1-3...
