    6.5CM deer bullet choice

The main reason I stepped down to a 130gr bullet is to get a little more velocity in the mix. I don't need the extra stability of the 140 at the distances I'm shooting, I'd rather have a little more terminal shock and less drop instead.

    6.5CM deer bullet choice

I never got around to hunting with the Browning 6.5CM, but when I got the Franchi last fall I worked up a load with the 140gr Gold Dots and Ramshot Hunter. Didn't have a lot of time to fool with it before season opened, but I managed to get a load that was good enough for starters, about 1" at...

    Quickload request: 6.5 CM

I'm not too sure about that number. I didn't measure it myself, it came from the Nosler load data for their 130gr bullets. But then I noticed that the number was different on their load data for other bullet weights, so I have no idea what to make of that. To me, case capacity is independent of...

    Cheap gun?

Probably depends on where you draw the line on "cheap." Back about 2010, I bought a Marlin XS7 in .243. It was about $300-350 at the time. It wears a Boyd's stock now, but the danged thing is the most reliably accurate rifle I own. Almost always easy to find a good load for. So when I heard...

    Quickload request: 6.5 CM

Mine is a 24", but I'll measure velocity with my Garmin anyway. Thanks for running the numbers. Just for comparison, here is what various sources list as a max load for 130gr bullets for these two powders: Big Game Nosler 43.0 Hornady 41.8 Hodgdon 40.5 QL 40.0 Staball 6.5 Hornady 45.5 Hodgdon...

    Quickload request: 6.5 CM

Thanks, Jim. On that data, what would you consider to be the max? The row at Step 0.0? Or the row above that, which is the last "Near max"?

    Quickload request: 6.5 CM

I hate to bother asking for it, but the data I'm seeing for these bullet/powder combos seems to vary a fair bit, depending on the source. So I guess I should see what QL has to say. Hornady case, 47.1gr water WLR primer #1 - 130gr Sierra Tipped GameKing (Gamechanger), #4330 Ramshot Big Game...

    Best affordable scope

Midway had a killer sale on these back in the fall, for $179. But they seem to be no longer available. Amazon has them at the regular $299 price. https://a.co/d/4OFG2WA

How much .005" seating depth can change patterns

It's running right about 2780 fps. Note that it's right at the max load per the Nosler data (38.5), and just slightly above the Hornady data (38.2). Sierra data for their 130gr bullets runs from 37.6 to 38.8, depending on the bullet. So I figured that it was safe enough to ease up to 38.5; I...

How much .005" seating depth can change patterns

Interesting thread, Mark. I read it the other day when you posted, and then had an even more dramatic example myself today. I'm also doing load development for this Franchi Momentum 6.5CM that I bought last fall. Several different powders and bullets in the 130gr range. In this particular case...

    Good bye

Ok, I'll play just this one time. 1. I'm not a Trump fanboy. I agree with him on some things, disagree on other things, and I think he's a jackass, personally. So let's get that out of the way. 2. I have 2 uncles who served in Vietnam, special forces stuff. My family has been killing commies...

    Ok, Guys. A PSA Warning!!!!!

I mean, that's why we feed them for 18 years, right??? When the young lads tease you about being old, you just use it to your advantage. "Son, I killed a big buck down in the creek bottom, but my back is hurting today. Drag him up to the top of the hill, I'll meet you at the truck." 😁

    Must have powders

Just FYI, Ramshot Enforcer and Accurate 4100 are the same powder, just different labels. Here's an example from the Western Powder load data, for 45 Colt (30K PSI):

    Must have powders

I reload mostly for medium calibers, so IMR 4064 is a mainstay. And can add Varget, as well.

    South Dakota?

Well, I can't speak to the pheasant and trout situation, but "Guntucky" has some pretty good deer hunting opportunities. Winters are fairly mild, especially compared to SD. Property and cost of living is relatively low, and it's quite red outside of a couple urban areas. Come on down!! 🙂

    Heads up Burris sale!!!!

Mine is on a .243, and I've had it on a 6.5 CM before I got the 6.5-20x scope. So, nothing big. My complaints with the Burris scopes are that they are a little heavy/solid, and the eye relief is a little shorter than I would prefer. But no complaints about optical quality, adjustments, etc...
