I always like to do a "pre-ladder" test:
Load 6 duplicates from min to max in even increments.
Shoot all over chrony on same target at 100 yards.
Mark each set of duplicates with a line connecting the 2 holes and
Plot the average velocity vs powder charge.
That Rem M783 is a great example of why one "needs" to buy and try a lot of rifles!
Some out-of-the-box Remington's I've had were unusually accurate.
AND Ron, I'll bet that 783 will do even better fine testing/tuning the ammo.
Well... Really doubt that a 25-06 or a 6.5-06 would do anything my 270s can't do,
but sometimes you just have to scratch an itch.
Just saw the thread. I was going to ask the same question, but you beat me to it.
My favorite deer rifles are 270W. But have always had this returning urge to try a 25-06.
Now, while I don't have much interest in a rifle that light,
A 1:9 twist 25-06 always seems to spark an interest although...
Yeah Guy, me too!
My GS loves to go for walks in the woods with me.
He's a protection dog, not a hunting dog.
People tend to leave us alone, but I'm aware that
he could attract unwanted attention from determined varmints and coyotes.
So its not just a potential problem for bird dogs.
Cleveland, I've had similar experience with a 286 NPT from my 9.3x62.
Complete pass thru on every hog and deer from all angles - Never found a bullet.
Goes straight thru any all hide, bones, cartilage and muscle.
Hole size in, 1-1/2" round hole out.
