    400 Whelen

I like to think that If I need or want a "bigger" rifle, It needs to be capable of shooting a 50% heavier bullet or capable of shooting the same weight bullet 500 fps faster. Using this thinking, If I already have a 35W. I would be looking at a 416 Taylor or a 338 Lapua.

    400 Whelen

I chose the 9.3x62 as the bigger than the 338-06, 35W. I chose not to go with the 375W and 400W because think either of these 2 calibers deserve a bigger case.

    I Despise Coyotes!!

Our deer lease has a rule: If a yot or hog shows up deer hunting is over! Just shoot these varmits!

    400 Whelen

tddeangelo, Some years ago I caught that same disease! Had a pitted/shot-out worthless barrel on a nice 8mm Mauser. Decided if I were to "change the engine", I would find the biggest "engine" that would fit the action and bolt face. Looked long and real hard at the 35, 375 and the 400 Whelens...

    Bigger Bores & Bigger Bullets

My load for that rifle is a 286 NPT right at 2,400 fps using IMR-4320.

    .243 Winchester...new work up.

Hodgeman, Be aware that with mono-metal bullets, there is not any "give" to the bullet diameter like there is with a cup/leadcore bullet. Doesn't happen too often, but more times with the mono-metal bullet the rifle may not like it. Mic and keep records of the bullet diameter. You'll find one...

Here I go , Thinking again....

Teknys, Congrads, too! But just a reminder: You'll still need to practice the way you'll hunt.

Shooting in 35 Whelen with new scope

Keep that rifle! I've only had 1 rifle that would shoot most any load to the same POI. You got a good one there.

    100 FPS worth it

Yep, Since you have the powder go with it. May very well be worth it.

    Tenacity...who's toughest?

In the South USA it's hogs and gators. Deer and coyotes are easy to kill about half may run some. Gators require a brain shot and it's a itty-bitty brain. I've seen hogs take several shots even though the 1st shot was good.

Barrel erosion... a real concern or not?

Here's a general idea how long your barrel will last:

    35 Whelen advice

Varget looks like a real good powder choice for that 225AB w/ a 97 to 99% case fill. Somebody must have put some thinking into that powder/bullet combo. You get any load data with those bullets and powder from previous owner?

    Bullet puller

LOL I have light sanded and reused'em for load development. I've never shot'em for group or use'em for hunting. BUT: LOL - Maybe I should try a group "pliered" bullets vs new ones?!

    Bullet puller

LOL I use a pair of channel lock pliers. Put cartridge in press. Lift up. Grab bullet with pliers such that it sets on top frame. Pull handle down.

    Forend Tip Pressure

Yep, I use aluminum duct tape for forearm pressure. Sometimes forearm pressure don't work. Sometimes its not best at the end. Al Duct tape can be added and moved for experimenting.

    Shooters Pro Shop Bullets

I always check the weight of NPT blems. The last box of 150s avg 149.7 hi=150.2 low=148.9 which is real good. But 1 box of 286s had 3 bullets 268, 270 & 273 rest were +/- 1.5 of the 286. Had another box that was dual model, i.e. 1/2 the box avg 286 other 1/2 avg 283 with nothing between 284 to...

    Front sight height??????

Yep, That's the method I use and trust! Shoot target at known distance and calculate it. Also works for windage adjustments.
