Just a little advice while it's at the smith I would have a new recoil pad installed also since the factor Rem pad can be hard as a brick. That 35 Whelen Classic I sold you brought tears to my eyes the first time I shot it before I changed the pad, that 300Wby will make your eyes cross.

I have never owned a 300WSM but have owned a 300Wby and still have a 300Wm. My 300Wby was very accurate after I put it in a stock with a full action metal bedding block but even with the heavy stock it gave me headaches when I shot it, the 300Wm is very tolerable in the same style/brand stock...

Every time the rifle sales become stagnant the industry comes out with the latest and greatest new cartridge. The short magnums are part of the rejuvenation of sales as is the creed mores and PRCs. Some are improvements and some are not. JMO

For magnum loads or velocities over 900fps a gas check will help prevent leading with cast bullets. I try to keep my lead bullet loads around or just below 800fps. Most of my loads are for paper punching where accuracy is most important.
