I have one in .308 with a Zeiss in the original aluminum rings. I bought this rifle in 2007 and have never had a bit of problems with the Tikka rings.
I also have a set of blued 30 MM Millet rings which have seen limited use. Personally I think these are a stronger ring than the Tikka's.
If...
Dr.Mike, A decade or more ago I had a mentor who took the time to help me understand the inner workings of the lock. He was/is a well known builder of fine locks, I don't mention his name or reveal all the tricks as per his request. When you get beyond lock tuning 101 the methods then become...
I've had an ongoing problem with my .40 caliber. It has double set triggers and the lock would hit so hard it jarred the rifle off target before it fired. I've tried to shoot through it but still the accuracy remained inconsistent. The lock was out of balance, meaning the mainspring and frizzen...
It's all good Dr. Mike. The difference between shooting moose and shooting squirrels with a flintlock is with the squirrel, you just got to "aim smaller and miss smaller"
Dr. Mike, when I first started shooting in muzzleloader competitions around 1976, I was shooting a .54 caliber and could often see my bullet holes at 100 yards when the light was right. I still have excellent long range vision for my age, close up not so good. I wish I had those young eyes back...
Shot a big doe this morning at 9:35 AM, 1/7/2018, with my .54 flintlock. That's 2 deer this year with that rifle and I think I'll hang it up till next season. Now it's time to go after a few squirrels.
I'll be the first to admit that each year deer hunting is getting harder and harder, and I don't know how long I'll be able to do it, but I'll hunt as long as possible. Someone has to be in really debilitating health to get my sympathy.
I just turned 65 in 2017, I have had a left knee and a...
That looks more like a Sporting Clays model than a standard Citori. It has both barrels ported and the receiver is silver with gold inlays...maybe clay pigeons. My Citori had both the receiver and barrel blued with no porting or inlays.
I'd much rather have one like you have than the standard model.
Don't be surprised if it begins to happen more as you age. I call it maturing as a human being. I've been hunting this cold weather too trying to get a mature doe for my son but I'm not seeing anything. Personally I don't care if I kill another one this year or not. I just enjoy deer hunting...
Getting ready for some squirrel hunting and thought I'd check my sights first. Due to a weak acorn crop I haven't seen many this year though, so I may not actually get a shot at one. Making one hold still long enough to get a good aim is the hard part.
Rifle is my .40 Caliber Lancaster flintlock...
Tom, I resize with a RCBS FL Sizer that has been setup trued to my rifles chamber and the expander stem has been removed. I deprime on a workbench by hand.
I prefer the expander ball by Hornady as it seems smoother in operation. I screw my Hornady sizing die into the press just far enough for...
I would refinish it also. A stiff toothbrush will help you keep that checkering clean when stripping the stock and later when applying stain and finish.
There are a couple of good finishes most people aren't aware of, my favorite now is called Jim Chambers Original oil finish. I also like the...
30 or so years ago I was a devoted dove hunter. The deer population was still low but the opportunity for dove hunting was really high. I lived in a small rural farming town and dove hunting was still a social gathering.
I started reloading in 1971 and shot thousands of shots at both doves...
During the restocking era of our Whitetail deer population the state used deer from numerous locations, for awhile they purchased deer from whoever had some for sale. Wisconsin, Texas and even locations within Georgia such as our barrier islands were trapped and released in areas devoid of deer...
These days it's pretty simple. For the majority of my deer hunting I go with my old .54 Flintlock. Of course it's not walnut or synthetic, it's curly maple. Does maple count?
For hunting where a iron sighted flintlock doesn't work well I go into the safe. Anything under 150 yards and in the...
Have you looked at the Henry rifles in 45-70? I'm starting to want a Golden Boy in .44 Magnum. If I get one I'll put a peep sight on the back. I think the one made for it is made by Skinner.
I've never shot a Henry so I don't really know anything about them except they look good.
Cloverleaf, I forgot to put the hat on. Sorry.
I've got another buck tag. In Georgia we get 2 buck tags and about 10 doe tags. But I'll be hunting for the big boys now that I've made some meat. Mostly I'll be hunting with the flintlock as I have for the last several years, but depending on the...
Got this buck yesterday morning 11/24/2017 with my .54 flintlock (my build) shooting a .530 roundball, 75 grains 3fg, and .015 patch.
Excuse the mean look but I was looking right into the sun, I'm not normally that gruff.
