They are great rifles!
On the 376 Steyr I didn't have to open up the bolt face, as was required on the 416 Taylor as both donors were 30-06s.
I really like the LH Rem 700s, but could only find the LH 77s when looking for donors for these builds. Didn't hurt that both were CF actions for these...
I wasn't insinuating that you are a novice...just providing some thoughts we can sometimes tend to forget when trying to determine why a bullet does what it does, or why an animal may react otherwise than expected when struck by a bullet.
Most who have spent any great length of time hunting...
As a fellow lefty and also appreciate cartridges that aren't as popular despite their capabilities, I can say that this looks like a rifle that will provide years of pleasure in owning, shooting and carrying afield on new adventures and memory making!
Hope she shoots as good as she looks!
While...
As Vince has alluded, the body make up of a pig is quite different than that of a deer.
Deer do not have the thicker hide, heavier muscle, and as found on the boars I hear, that heavier chest plate of bone, that will make a drastic difference in body mass and makeup, and therefore result in a...
It is interesting that you mention penetration over velocity...
When the 376 Steyr was first introduced, it was the part of the explanation as to the design and purpose of this little brother to the great 375 H&H. They reported that in many cases, PHs were downloading their 375 H&Hs to the 2300...
Just a thought here...
Have you verified your barrel's twist?
In researching for reloading my newly acquired 257 Roberts rifle, I read on some issues in 25 calibre rifles where bullet stability and performance was problematic, and the end result was the twist rate, even with bullets heavier than...
If your hunting is typically less than 300 yards, then the non-boattail bullets will perform just fine, for accuracy and on-game performance. But as always, bullet placement is the key.
A boattail bullet's advantage comes into play after 300 yards for the enhanced BC and velocity retention...
I agree.
It produced my first one shot kills on both elk and bison in the 338 Win Mag.
While I had previous kills on both species with the 270 Wby and 7mm Rem Mag (elk) and 300 Win Mag (bison), where the initial shotos were well placed in the vitals, they did take one or more follow up shots to...
While the 210 gr Partition out of the 338 Win Mag may not have the extra level of authority that the 250 gr would have from the 338 RUM, I did not find its performance on black bear, moose, elk, grizzly bear and bison to be wanting for anything more.
If comparing apples to apples...using my local data of 2200' asl elevation, 50 degrees F and 70% humidity (fall hunting conditions), using a 200 yard zero and 400 yard distance for legal ballistic performance required for hunting bison in BC (retained energy of 2000 ft.lbs of energy at the...
Lapua might be pricey, but there are reasons why some of the top competitor are using it.
My rifle performs best with the Center-X (0.388" avg for 10, 5 shot groups @ 50 yards; while this might not be as accurate as others can produce, I found it good for me and my shooting ability as I learn...
Very nice!😎
Love the Swede!
Such an easy cartridge to work with!
And in a modern action, there is plenty of room for improvement to match the velocities that the Europeans load their ammo to (close to 2780 vs 2650 fps as loaded for the older surplus rifles here in NA).
Hope it proves to be...
My 270 WSM (LH Browning X Bolt All Weather) really likes the Federal Premium 140 gr Trophy Bonded Tip ammo. It will produce 0.396" groups at 100 yards at 3156 fps out of the 23" barrel.
I have acquired 4 boxes of component bullets for working up a load as well, but haven't yet done so. Looks...
I am on my second 270 WSM and really like the cartridge.
My current is the LH Browning X Bolt All Weather and it prefers the Federal Premium 140 gr Trophy Bonded Tip ammo; 0.396" groups at 100 yards at 3156 fps from my rifle's 23" barrel.
It also likes the Nosler 140 gr AccuBond ammo with groups...
While the AccuBond is my favourite hunting bullet, and the most accurate in my own 300 WSM, the Bondstrike being a bonded bullet will still perform well on elk.
Norma has always produced quality products (brass, ammo), and has proven itself well over the past several decades. I wouldn't hesitate...
Welcome to the best forum for firearms and reloading.
Lots of great people on this site with plenty of knowledge to share.
The 358 Win is a great cartridge that might not get as much attention as it deserves...but is one that I enjoy shooting and hunting with.
I have had a BLR in 358 for over...
Either set up will work for what you need in this situation.
At that distance, higher velocity isn't going to be needed, so milder loads would be recommended to help with recoil for your daughter.
I would see which load in each rifles shoots the best, and have the kids shoot both to see which...
