An update:
I am now in the process of acquiring a second 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, in one of my bucket list rifles; the WInchester Model 1885 Low Wall!
Unfired, new in box!
While I have always liked the 280 Rem (one of my all time favourite cartridges), and have used the 7MM STW extensively on many animals over the past 27 years, and a have now acquired the 7MM PRC, there will always be a place in my battery for the tried and true 7mm Rem Mag! It just plain works...
While the Nosler 250 gr AB load is rated for 2550 fps, I have yet to actually chronograph it in my Sako with its factory barrel which is just under 24". It should be close to that. I am happy with its ability to produce 0.674" groups at 100 yards.
Just as an update from my original post, I have used the 130 gr Terminal Ascent bullet (Federal Ammunition) that produces 2855 fps and 0.291" groups at 100 yards, from my LH Browning X Bolt rebarreled to 6,5 Creedmoor with a 24" Benchmark barrel. I have now taken red deer, Fallow buck, and a...
For me, it was a few factors...
First, it was a cartridge none of my friends had. They have 35 Whelen's, and one has a 9.3x64. While great cartridges, I wanted to try something different.
Second, I enjoyed reading about it in the articles by John Barsness, including those where my Dad guided...
You are not alone...
I have done lots of research and very little actual handloading of late...also due to time constraints, and having the space to set up my reloading equipment. At least I am ready to do the handloading as priorities for the 257 Roberts (115 gr BT), 358 Win (225 gr AB), and...
I enjoyed watching Susan get her springbok last year. And it was super tender and extremely tasty!
I am going for a copper and a black springbok on next years hunt. Love their colours!
The Kalahari subspecies would be fun too. Looks like the common, but I guess is a little bigger, and heavier...
While I do own quite a few Leupolds, I do own a couple of Trijicons. My 1-4 is on my 416 Taylor and I have no problems using it on the gongs out to 300 yards. The 3-9x40 is on my 270 Win. Great glass and I like the green reticles under low light conditions! Triangle post on the 1-4, and green...
Sometimes things happen for a reason!
Getting a Tom would be a great thing...but doubling up on the same Tom, and another with your partner in life takes it to that next level! Congrats on a memory you'll both cherish!
Looks like a great place!
Any special animals on your list this time?
Ones you did not get previously?
Or ones that you will hunt again as you had so much fun with them on your previous trip(s)?
It is always interesting to see how many use the tried and true cartridges to hunt with, and even more so when we learn how others also use the new, oddball, obsolete, or less popular cartridges too. And learn about cartridges we might not have thought of, or even heard of prior to this sharing...
"I’m not sure how some of you all decide what to hunt with!"
One must keep in mind, that we may not still own some of these rifles🤔...and then again, some of us might! 😎
As stated, some of us grab that new-to-us firearm that we haven't taken game with as yet, while others are waiting for...
