Two almost opposite points:
(1) a hunter only needs one good shot to drop most animals
(2) a 1.5" shot group @ 100 yards is fine, until that distance is extended to 300+ yards and then you're looking at a 4.5"+ wide group if there is no wind, mirage, or other factor that makes a difference...
280 Ackley is always a great, non-magnum choice for a rebuild. With the ability to effectively move the heavy-for-caliber .284 bullets with out the recoil of a magnum is an accuracy plus, not to mention the wide variety of those bullets for non-dangerous North American or African game.
If you...
Your 3.60" COL could be tickled up to 3.62 and 3.63 OR reduce the most accurate load by 0.005" at a time until you either are happy with what you have or frustrated beyond description and POed that you ever messed with something that was working. Keep us posted.
You appear to have a very good load worked up for mule deer. Control the buck fever (if that is possible) and you'll have something great to hang on the wall with the way that 264 Win shoots. Good luck on the hunt!
I weigh the new, unprimed brass, write the weight on the side of the case with a fine point Sharpie, then put it in a MTM case from the heaviest to the lightest to keep it all segregated. It is common to have two or three groups of brass the same weight or a +/- .3 grain range. Does it all help...
Either powder will do the job, but every barrel and chamber are different and one load is great in rifle A and scatters like quail in rifle B. Varget is also a good powder, similar to H-4895 and Varget is temperature resistant.
The experience with RL-22 has been generally much slower than what is in the reloading manuals for several different rifles, but H-1000 in the 7mm Rem Mag is great. I've ran with 69gn in my 140gn Sierra Game Kings and they'll make a big, ragged hole at 200 yards.
With the 160gn Partition I used 58gn of RL-19 and got an average MV of 2975fps from a FN bolt action. There were no signs of overpressure, but I settled on 56gn as the "go to" load if I'm using the Partition.
I have used ER Shaw twice and a third is still at the factory, McGowen, and Adams & Bennett barrels on custom rifles. Every rifle shoots sub MOA with my handloads. In my opinion, so much of how you think the barrel performs has to do with how you clean it, what you don't use to clean it, and how...
This was recovered from a large white tail buck shot at 135yds. The bullet hit a rib on the R side, then deflected to the left at about a 45 degree before stopping in front of the left rear leg, just under the hide. I worked up to a non-book load of 57gn of Superformance from a bolt action 280...
Double D: what is your RL-17 load for the 280 Rem? I recently saw that Win 780 is out of production so I need a new powder for my 168gn Match Kings in my 280.
I'm looking for some favorite loads for a bolt action 6.5mm Creedmoor. The rifle has a new 1:8 twist, 24" Shaw barrel on a FN Mexican Mauser action. I have 129gn Hornady Interlock, 130gn Swift Scirocco II, and 140gn Hornady SST bullets to test and new Hornady brass.
Here is what has worked well for me. All cartridges are the max COL the magazine will hold / feed.
100gn BarnesTSX
63gn H-4350 (< .5 MOA@100yds) --- most accurate load in my 257 Wby
110gn Nosler Accubond
68gn RL-22
65gn RL-19 (< .5 MOA@100yds)
117gn Hornady Interlock
73gn H-1000...
780 works well with the 270 Win. I used about 55gn or so with 130gn bullets, but I'm not sure. I know the velocities were consistent on the chronograph.
Nosler is in a bit of a pinch with their new .264 chambering. If it is only offered in Nosler rifles, sales will not be too high and actually may be quite low. The Nosler rifles are not cheap. I am sure they are good rifles, but they are not in the league of your starter rifle.
If Nosler allows...
While all these things can add up to something that makes a difference, what isn't accounted for directly is the mirage distorting the target. A great load developed to the best degree can go south fast when a difficult mirage shows its ugly face.
Years ago I kind of had the knack for reading...
35 Whelen brass is easily necked up to .366. A small amount needs to be trimmed.
H-4350 and H-414 worked the best for fireforming the cases. Later, I found out about the Cream of Wheat method used in fireforming, but I won't have to use it for a while.
Yup, these suckers will put down ANYTHING on the planet. 270gn Speer Hot Core bullets are great over H-4350. A buddy put three shots from his 9.3 into the same (large) hole using 250gn Barnes TTSXs----and these were the first three shots out of the rifle.
Hornady and Nosler make good brass for...
24" barrel, bolt action 280 Rem, lg rifle primers and I know some of these loads are hot, but there were no pressure signs AND they're all sub MOA @ 100yds. The Superformance load made the smallest group.
140gn Game King, 55gn H-4350, 2962fps
150gn Game King, 58gn Superformance, 3042fps
150gn...
