Two possible causes of the failure to fire are a bad primer caused by the manufacturing process (out of your control) and a primer that had some kind of post manufacturing contamination, such as case sizing oil from your fingers seeping into the primer. More than likely it is the former cause...
Ray: I know several hunters who use match bullets from Hornady and Sierra and their deer drop just like those hit with traditional hunting bullets. One guy uses Hornady 162gn Match bullets in his 7STW. Another uses the 168gn Match Kings in his 308 Win. Both hunters have taken deer at 600+ yards...
Ray: My loads were probably in the area of 2640fps. I have not got chronograph readings, but I plan on running these loads over my MagnetoSpeed. The load with W-748 is one of the few I know of that is very good in two rifles (with different barrel lengths).
The Mule deer buck taken by my son...
I'm lucky to have two very good loads:
44gn W-748, Win cases and large rifle primers, 168gn Sierra Match Kings
and
44gn Varget, Win cases and large rifle primers, 168gn Hornady Match bullets.
The W-748 load is also a very, very good load in my son's 308 Win. It's dropped a large Mule deer...
Put me on the list that prefers Winchester primers to other large rifle primers. Of all the blown primers I've had I know they were either caused by too much pressure / powder OR they were in pockets that didn't grasp well enough. I've gotten better over the years with detecting when a pocket is...
Lookin' good.
I'll take accuracy over speed and a lighter bullet that is more accurate than a heavier one is OK since it wont make a difference when dropping big game.
M7025-06: 140gn Nosler BT with 58gn SF gave me from 3104 to 3143fps from a 24" barrel. I got from 2988 to 3018 with the same amount of powder in the 140gn Sierra Game Kings. I'm guessing the warmer barrel and higher BC of the Nosler bullet enables it go faster. The new chronograph was used for...
If you can, run the 140gn Accubonds with Superformance. I've had great accuracy with that powder in 140 and 150 grain bullets. Bang-flop results on a big White tail buck, too.
H-4350 is just as good with the 140gn bullets as the SF (in my 280). Good luck.
I firmly believe a hot or even a warm barrel will bring faster velocities compared to the earlier or cold barrel loads. Several years ago I was testing 270 Win loads and had to wait almost five minutes for the barrel to cool. Shoot, cool, shoot, cool, etc., and the earlier in the day I shot the...
The knob on the bottom of the mount needs to be loose, like half way off, when you get the strap as tight as you can on the barrel. THEN screw the knob in and get the additional tension on the strap.
You can use the Sporter with a muzzle brake. The directions show how to position the mount...
Having the screw knob loose when getting the strap tight, and then getting the strap tighter my closing in the knob has worked well for keeping the unit tight on the barrel. The rough surface of the barrel may have helped also.
I fired 10 or so rounds with a braked 280 Rem and the chrony mount...
The Sporter has two rubber spacers to go between the base of the bayonet (that's what the sensor is called) and the barrel. Due to the lack of spacers, it may not work with some barrels BUT the Sporter can be sued with muzzle brakes (if they are not too long or too large in diameter). The display...
I have the Sporter and it is worth every penny. Forget about changes in wind, sunlight, or having to worry about shooting the stand your chrony is on because with the MagnetoSpeed you only have to have it firmly attached to the barrel. If you look through the bore and cannot see the bayonet (the...
Last summer I talked to a guy who lived on and hunted on Kodiak Island for 20+ years. He used a 270 Win with 150gn Partitions for everything that wasn't a bear. I suppose if he had an unexpected encounter with a bear he had the right type of bullet, not necessarily a big enough one. He had all...
The 115gn BTs were the most accurate bullet from my 25-06. I used 53.5gn of H-4831, which is just over the max load by Hodgdon, but there were no signs of pressure. Three shots, two holes. With 52gn of RL-19 and the 117gn Hornady BTSPs I got another great load.
I sold that rifle to a buddy in...
168gn SMK and 44gn W-748 or the 175gn SMK and 45gn W-748, both with Win brass, Win large rifle primer, and both half MOA @ 600 yards shooting off a bipod.
Every deer hit by my son or me with an Interlock bullet has gone down within four or five steps. Cup and core hunting bullets are plenty strong for deer, even when you hit a shoulder or a front leg. If you have to battle cross winds, the 180gn bullets will do better than the 165s-----provided...
