On the Facebook 35 Whelen group lots of guys have tried CFE 223 with the 250's and getting into the 2600 fps+ range easily. I shoot 225's often and they are getting into the 2800 fps range easily with them. What powders are you able to find where you live?

I'm going to try CFE 223 in mine soon. I would look at Varget, IMR 8208, IMR or H 4895 or even stick with IMR 3031. Any of those you can find locally would do the job.

I like that you used the 140 gr out of your 280 AI for your grizzly. Too many guys think they need a cannon with the toughest bullet available. Not surprised that it gave you a very quick kill.

@Blkram Gil, the 200 gr Accubond out of your 358 Win would be perfect for anything you'll want to hunt. Since it is a custom hopefully you'll be able to load it out a bit more than the 2.8" limit it the BLR.

That's why he came on asking the question, it behaved very oddly and was wondering why. He clearly stated it was a broadside shot several times. Most of the time bullets behave as expected but the odd time they do unexpected things.

I have a bunch of those 180 gr Speer's and am thinking of trying them next spring for black bear in my Whelen. Sounds like they will be devastating.

I believe that bullet is designed for the 35 Rem at much slower speeds. Sounds like it was still tough enough to handle that extra velocity. I would agree with you about using something a bit more suitable for the Whelen. Someone mentioned the 225 gr Sierra and that's what I would look at next.

I think that could have happened with any bullet to be honest. Sometimes weird things happen. I wouldn't worry about it too much and would try the 95 gr BT again. Of course you could try the Accubond or Partition instead.

If I'm reading it right the bullet deflected after hitting the shoulder bone and penetrated to the rear leg on the same side. Is that correct?
