Well I had planned to give the .35 Whelen a spin. Other more important things have arisen making it necessary to sell a few guns, the .35 included.
This year for elk, I am planning to use Golden Ticket. A pre-64 Model 70 .30-06 that I built for use in crappy weather. It shoots great!
The load...
I was 13 and very gangly. The Savage 99 EG .300 had a steel buttplate which seemed much too friendly with my bony shoulder. Still, despite missing more bucks than I care to admit, on the last day I got a little 2x3 Mule Deer buck at about 75 yards. The factory loaded 150 grain Silvertip bullet...
That’s darn good shooting Jorey. Every time I get an itch to build a .22 Creed, I remember the under appreciated .223 and what its capable of with a fast-twist barrel and heavy bullets. It may be the ultimate cartridge when it comes to popularity, ubiquity of both guns and ammo as well as...
Can’t go wrong with a .30-06!
Having a hard time imagining what a 6.5 PRC or .300 WSM will do that your 7mm Rem Mag wouldn’t. The 6.5 PRC will kick less. The .300 will shoot heavier bullets. Hmm. Flip a coin. Or get one of each!

I would load a 240 grain Hornady JHP to whatever shot the best and go to town! I might also see where the easiest to find factory 240 grain stuff shot in correlation with your handloads just in case.
I always wanted one of those Ruger M96’s, they look like a scaled down Savage 99!
I have taken two mule deer bucks and one cow elk with a 7mm Rem Mag and 160 grain Accubonds, one shot each.
I think the 150 grain Accubond (only 10 grains lighter) would be a great all-around load frankly. Something in the 4350-4831 burn rate range would work famously. I’ve not found the 7mm...
Right now it will be a Savage 99 .243 that these are tested in. I have made arrangements to acquire a nice takeoff barrel and have it installed. Not sure what the timeframe on that project will be.
So many other things going on that it might be a while before I get to test them though. As soon...
I think I could pick three and be just as well but I will play along!
1) .220 Swift - Varmints especially.
2) .25-06 Remington - Smaller deer and Antelope
3) .30-06 Springfield - Anything short of Dangerous Game but especially mule deer, elk, black bear, caribou and moose
4) .375 H&H Magnum...
As a younger man I wanted to try them all. But as wisdom replaced folly, I have tended to find a single “all-around” load in each gun and stick to it.
The guns I prefer are mostly utilitarian choices so that they could with a different bullet be used on different game or for different purposes...
The 55 grain BT and Varget have proven to be a great combo in .223, .22-250 and .220 Swift rifles in my experience. With that fast twist, you should probably give something in the 68-75 grain range a try.
I used to shoot the Hornady 68 grain BTHP Match bullets in my AR-15 which was a .223...
The Partition is a fine bullet!
For me the Accubonds shoot better 9 times out of 10 and perform just as well or have so far for me in every cartridge I have tried them in. I made the change to the Accubond as my standard go to in several rifles about 10-12 years back. I have pretty much used...
Has anyone tried Ramshot Hunter in .243 Win? I have a few folks wanting me to load up 100 grain bullets for deer season etc. The .243 is quite popular around here and with good reason, its accurate, easy to shoot and kills quite well for its size. It is the cartridge that Charles Newton intended...
In the same vein of Blkram's thought-provoking posts, I submit the following to the collective for discussion.
If you could, which would be the 20 cartridges that could stay, and the rest were ended in the name of standardizing production and materials for availability? Although this is only a...
Also just for general knowledge, I would take a decent Winchester Model 70 XTR or New Haven Featherweight in .243 as a partial trade and take the balance in $$!
I haven't fired a shot through it. I would imagine very well but never got the chance and rather than invest a bunch of money developing a load etc. I am sending it down the road.
