I will add something about bullet choice, after killing a lot of animals with 130g partitions I switched to 130g BT's when they first came out and for deer sized animals they can't be beat. I also switched to RL 22 when it hit the market with a F 215 primer pushing a 130g at 3200fps you don't...
Good thing he had backup, that first shot looked like it was low in the guts and in the dead picture there it looks like stomach membrane pushed out of it's side.
I bought my first new rifle in 1966, a Husquvarna imperial grade 270 with a 24 inch barrel. Killed my first 11 elk with it with 130g hand loads, and my wife is still killing with a 270. I prefer a 338 cal. for elk but would not hesitate to use a 270 if I needed to.
Absolutly never a round in chamber in a vehicle, legal in OR to have the magazine loaded not in Utah, Colorado and Wash. unless it's been changed, don't know about other states. Years ago in Wash. a game cop was accidentally shot by some guys in a jeep trying to unload before he could check...
I just checked my 6.5-300 Wby. die and wife's 6.5 Creedmoor and they both have the larger 1/4 x 28 thread shaft. The dies were bought in the last 2 years, probably an up grade to stronger shaft.
I think I have my load dialed in, RL26 new brass F215 primer, clean barrel. Shot fouler and then shot 3 shots touching 7/8 in. above fouler shot. 2950fps. Yesterday with a very dirty barrel the same load shot around 1 1/4 in. This load catches up with my 210 Part. load at 3200fps at 400 yds...
thanks Jimbires: 88G WENT 2974fps and 89g went3037, I shot the 87g load and shots 2 and 3 were touching 1& 1/4 inches from 1st shot. I shortened up oal to 3.690 and will try the 87g load again tomorrow weather permitting.
Jimbires: I don't have any unsized brass until I shoot again. I weighed some new 20 year old brass against some newly purchased and the new old weighed 224g vs. the new at 227g. They both held 99.9g of water. I can't weigh a case full of water on my 50 year old balance scale without it tipping over.
