I once shot a large muley through the front of the shoulders at the base of neck at about 10 feet with a 110g acc going 3500fps and it exited so don't worry about close shots. In hole was about the size of a 50 cent piece and out hole about the same.
Just a question- has anyone decapped a live primer and had it go off? I have removed hundreds of them over the last 50 years and never had one go off. You are just pushing it out with the decapping pin not striking it.
I would stick with Weatherby- Norma brass. I tried some high priced Nosler brass in my 338 win. and it was so soft or weak the primer pockets were loose after one shot. Also it held 6g more water than Win. brass which tells me it is thinner.
Don't know if this will help but I was using RL-22 with win. brass, F-215 primers, OAL 3.340. This was in a WBY. ultra light weight 24in. barrel. I started at 56g and worked my way up to 60g, 3080 fps. It shot bug holes with that pencil thin barrel. I switched from 4831 to RL 22 30 years ago in...
I started with an 30-06 in 1960, bought a new Husquvarna Imperial grade 270 in 1966 so my favorite caliber is 270, WIN. or WBY. and second is 338 Win. or 340 wby. Many others have came and gone but those are my favorites for big game. preferred rifle brand is Weatherby.
Shamrock: the velocity was checked with a Magneto speed chrony, book load velocities are usually very optimistic for the amount of powder they show. All of the Hornady factory loads were way slower than advertised, maybe because of the 20 inch barrel.
Guy: never tried a Bogpod but I am going to buy a Pig saddle to try on my Vortex tripod. The Pig saddle clamps the rifle to help with the up and down wobble.
I feel real good about what I can do at age 72. I had open heart surgery at age 28, back surgery in 2000, pacemaker in 2006 and I am still able to restore cars, do hard physical labor and work out at the gym. This morning I hiked 5 miles picking wild black berries so I am very happy to be still...
I would have to go with the WBY. deluxe, not be cause I think it's better but just like the shape and feel of the stock and I have owned quite a few including two 340's. Just my preference, never had the pleasure of owning a Sako.
Is that a newer Leupold with dual erector springs? I have had a few problems with the older ones with single springs not holding point of impact but no problems with 8 of the newer VX-3's.
