I have found that with light hard kicking rifles that jump up off the front rest or torque to the side if you hold down on top scope it really tightens up the groups. I use to think that the rifle did not move until the bullet had left the barrel but as usual I was wrong.
I am fortunate to live in a state with lots of elk and have been killing them with rifles in 270win to 378 WBY for 55years and have seen dozens of others killed by other hunters. What I have observed is there is little difference from 270 to 30 cal,but from 338 and on up the elk die a lot...
Truck driver, I only use new brass for hunting, your chances of having a brass failure are much less. In 50 years of reloading I have never noticed enough difference in group size to make any difference in a hunting rifle.
Some of this brass is from factory ammo and some from purchased brass, cracks are typical neck cracks that you get from too many reloadings. I have one batch of 338 Winchester brass that got a shoulder split after one or two firings and years ago some 270 Remington brass that on second loading I...
Dr Mike, the chamber would not have anything to do with a new unfired brass cracking when squeezed with pliers. It appears the brass is not properly annealed.
I fired a round that was loaded the third time and it had 5 splits in the neck, so tried one that was loaded twice and same results. So I unloaded all of them and squeezed the necks with pliers and they all either split lengthwise or around base of neck. Then I tried a new one and it split so it...
A 338 win with a 200g BT going 3000 to 3100 fps is an elk killing machine, I have seen and heard of many bulls taken at ranges between 50 and 750 yards so a 200 g ACC or E tip will definitely do the job. My 338 shoots all three of these bullets real close to the same point of impact. Good luck...
They have a great deal on Leupold vx3i 4.5-14 CDS 30mm tube side focus for $499.99 with free shipping. I ordered one for my 338 win. They have other models and brands on special also.
New win brass weight-234.5g, 82.6g of water to top of neck, Nosler 210g brass, 88.6g of water. WIN 82.9g of RL17 to top of neck, Nosler 86.8g to top of neck. Belt diameter is the same on both new brass.
I just wasted 65 bucks on some 338 win brass, it weighs 20g less than my win brass and holds 5.9g more water. This is fine as I only had to add 1g of powder to get the same velocity, but after one shot the primer pockets are getting loose and the belt will barely fit into my Lee primer tool. It...
Thanks everyone, Guy, I will use my old Wby. fibermark that is rebarreled to .338 win., load will be 225 NP at around 2900fps. Backup rifle is 6.5-300 Wby. ULW loaded with 140g AB at 3400fps.
Truckdriver, 72 to 73 g of RL17 with 200g BT gives over 3000fps in my 338, Win brass and base of bullet seated to the bottom of neck. 200G acc should be similar velocities.
It scared me so bad that to this day I won't hunt with anyone carrying a Remington unless it has a after market trigger. Her's was a new 1988 model 7 at the time.
