My wife shot a large blacktail buck with a Barnes 110g ttsx going 3400+fps, it entered rf shoulder and was under the hide in left hind quarter, about 3 feet of penetration. Two petals were missing.
Good glasses are a must for long range glassing and also for glassing for animals bedded in thick cover. I recently bought a Vortex 1500 on sale for $360 shipped and it is outstanding so you don't have spend a fortune on a range finder, spend it on the binoculars.
This was the first load shot for group not the first round through the rifle. I first shot two lighter loads over chrony to see speed before wasting any powder or brass. I have been reloading for 55 years so I know where to start. I have never had a maximum book load create excessive pressure in...
Blkram, I totally agree, the .338 or .340 WBY. with any weight partition is a real elk rifle and I have been hunting them with every thing from .270 to .378 WBY. For 55 years. Another over looked bullet that works very well is a 200g Nosler BT at 3000 to 3300 fps.
This was probably to easy but the first load I tried in the wife's new WBY. Camilla shot 3 shots touching in a horizontal group. Load was from Nosler book, max charge of RL17 2850 fps. from a 20 in. barrel, OAL 2.750. I'll shoot it again to verify but some times I like it to be easy.
Gerry, my first one was a accumark, but scoped and ready to hunt it was almost 10 lbs., too much for a old man so I sold it and have an ultralite on order. The accumark shot 1/2 inch with 127g factory loads, never got around to trying my reloads yet. By the way the so called ultralight is still...
Guy, I didn't need one either but I wanted one and have no regrets. Who cares about barrel life, at age 70 not to worried about barrel life. I Have a .270 wby. that has had hundreds of hot loads through it and it still shoots clover leafs.
I bought my wife one of those about 1974 only it's a tube feed and it still has a Wby. 4x rimfire scope on it. I believe the list price was $140 but I guess they are worth a little more now. Congratulations on finding such a nice one. The wife's has had thousands of rounds through it with only a...
Guy, I just got my wife a Camilla in 6.5 creedmor and it is one sweet little rifle. I could hunt with it myself with no problem. Weatherby had it in stock and my local dealer ordered two and we had them with in a week. I think any lady hunter would like them. I wasn't sure about a 20 in. barrel...
Salmonchaser, those 300s really like IMR7828, if you have any it is worth a try. Years ago I switched from H4831 and gained velocity without any pressure sign, it works well in .257 to 340 Wbys. and also 7mm Rem.
I know two people who use nothing but 150 g partitions in their .300wbys. and at 3550fps they are absolutely deadly on elk. One fella is 80 years old and has shot more elk than most people have even seen. It may not be considered a long range bullet but at that velocity who cares about BC ?
I just bought my grand daughter a Wby. Camilla in 6.5 creedmore and it is one sweet little rifle, made to fit women. The recoil is very mild and the rifle is well balanced.
