In no particular order, RL-19, H-1000, H-4831, and W-780 are the powders I used in my 300 Roy and each of them shoots sub 1" groups with 180gn Interlocks and Accubonds @ 100 yards using a bipod as a front rest. By the way, I've never tired any other powders so I guess this mean my 300 Roy likes...
My former 25-06 with a 26" barrel and a full load of IMR-4831 behind a 120gn Hornady Interlock was almost as fast my 257 Wby Mag (24" barrel) with the same bullet from a full load of H-1000. Neither load was over the book, there were no pressure signs, and the 25-06 had a nice flat trajectory...
The unique shotgun was made by Charles Haaken Fils Liege in 14 Gauge SxS.. It has 28" barrels. The 14 gauge was a attempt by the gun makers for a new fouling gauge, but it never took. This shotgun has a cross bolt style lock and safety.
A friend got a 14 gauge S/S and will be looking for load data. Does anyone have published data or data they've used?
He's likely going to split the difference between equal weights of 12 and 16 gauge data. He has lots of odd / rare calibers so this is nothing new.
Good shooting, for sure.
My 280 Rem eats RL-19 all day long. Your shot groups with 160gn Game Kings look familiar. I ran all the way up to 57gn before finding 55.5gn is the most accurate load.
RL-17 works well with the 129gn Hornady SST when the temperature is 35 degrees. What it grouped at 65 deg was the same at 35 deg., so I'll take that as a good sign.
A buddy and I went 50-50 on 100 "once fired" Norma made 257 Wby brass. HA! More than 30 of primer pockets were loose. Unless they were used in a very high pressure test load for some performance specs test, there is no way they got loose from one firing. I would rather buy either the blemished...
The most accurate 3-shot groups @ 300 yards with my 300 Weatherby were made with RL-19 and H-4831 pushing flat bottom 180 grain Hornady Interlocks. The RL-19 made a 1.25" group. The H-4831 had a group 2.2" wide.
1. Dr. Mike's explanation is very good. I will save this for reference when someone asks the question about flat base vs boat tails so I won't have to think.
2. I had a 270 Win that would not shot 130gn Interbonds anywhere near as well as 130gn Interlocks (flat base) or 140gn Interlocks (boat...
57gn of Superformance with the 150 gn Sierra Game King was chronoed at 2975fps and bang flop results vs a large White tail. I know this is not a book load. However, it came through load work up in my bolt action 280 Rem and there were no problems. It was also able to make a 2.5" shot group @ 400...
Some one, please, run QuickLoad for a 6.5mm Creedmoor with 130 grain Swift Scirocco IIs and 140 grain Hornady SSTs. I have little knowledge of how the program works, but the powders I would like data on are H-414, H-4350, IMR-4350, Superformance, RL-17, RL-19, W-748 and Varget. 24" barrel with...
I have bought lots of blemished bullets from Nosler and from Hornady. None of these slightly discolored bullets had anything wrong with their weight, length, or concentric value. For the money, they're a steal.
Superformance runs very well with 140 and 150gn Sierra Game Kings. I went "off the ranch" and worked up a load with 150gn SGKs, basing the load off 140s and working up. Pushed over the book limit, the SF ran the 140s at 3168fsp and the 150s at 3120fps. Outstanding accuracy with the 150s at 400...
I verify the 200 or 300 yard zero a few days before the season starts, just to be sure even though it may be a great rifle and a great scope. I leave the bore dirty for opening day. If I get by deer on that day, I clean the rifle later. Some years that has been the case. Other years it has been...
Your rifle likes some factory ammo, and not so much with others. The harmonics for your best shooting ammo is less of a factory than with the other stuff, but if you're looking to handload then you're in a different arena. Powders available to the factories are not what you and I can buy on the...
I have a 6.5mm Creedmoor with a 1:8 twist. The 120gn Hornady factory A-Max ammo is great with my rifle. The 129 and 140gn Hornady SSTs along with the 130gn Swift Scirocco IIs also do well. Oddly enough, the only bullet far that doesn't do so well is the 140gn Nosler Ballistic Tip.
Best load for the 175gn SMKs was with 45gn of W-748, 24" barrel. This load made a four inch group at 600 yards, shot from a bipod. The group drifted seven inches to the right.
