I looked at a thompson pro hunter today. $375 plus my H&R just didn't seem like a good deal for another 2 inches of barrel. I picked up up another 50 pieces of brass.
I've had suggestions of imr 3031, imr 4064, and aa2520. which one would you try next?
from Nosler #6 .270 win=shilen 24" 1-10", .308win= lilja 24" 1-10", 30-06 lilja 24" 1-10"
you should be able to pick up a nosler manual from most any of the online stores. its a good manual, but I haven't been able to get their printed velocities.
I think I found my problem. between the two test days shooting 60.2 I bought a larry willis head space gauge. I moved my sizing die up to push the shoulder back .001. my cases were about .005 longer to the shoulder. that could explain the velocity differences. it never occured to me that moving...
thanks for the encouraging words. not bad at all for a couple of $330 rifles.
RL15 is the only powder I have tried that will group with the 200 NAB. I thought I had a good load with 60.2 gr @ 2655fps. I loaded up a few more to recreate it and it changed. the second time I shot 60.2gr it shot at...
I'm calling the 7-08 and .270 done. I'm still not impressed with any of my .35 loads. I've settled on 60.8 gr of RL 15 pushing the 200NAB at 2660. I need to run some seating depth tests to tighten up the groups a bit. I know this cartridge has a lot more potential but I can't find a combination...
I don't have QL but I have some real world data for varget and the 120 NBT. 44.5gr is 2923fps 45.0gr is 2956fps in my 22" 7-08. my math says you should be around 2830.
those groups look pretty good to me.
varget shoots OK in my 7-08. H380 and W748 are both faster and shoot smaller groups in my rifle.
shooting over a chronograph made me do a LOT more testing.
hornady has data for their #3035 150gr round nose and the 06. I would think any bullet that expands rapidly would be fine at close range. my son hunts with a 7-08 and 120gr BT at around 3kfps. he killed 3 whitetails last year all inside 60 yards. all 3 were instant kills that never took a step...
those groups don't look bad at all. I really haven't been too picky about the .308. I've ben using IMR4895 and getting about an inch @ 2860. just yesterday morning, I loaded 50 rounds with W748, RL15, and Varget. the lyman book says 748 will get close to 3k with a 150gr. ....and just picked up...
I gotta get me one of those calculators for my chronograph. I've been doing all that math the hard way.
if you don't mind me asking, what powder are you running in the .308?
I've had some loads that would shoot DUP over and over again that shoot all over the paper and some that cloverleaf with...
I can shoot 2.5" groups with my 94 and open sights ....shooting from bags. I can't keep them on paper standing with no rest. I really like the hornady FTX 160gr. the last 3 shot group I have in my notes for velocity is 2446, 2428, 2455 with the max of leverevolution.
I paid $99 for my prochrono digital. it's been great so far. it sure is nice to know for sure how fast I'm pushing these little pills.
I worked up a short range, light recoil load for the 7-08 for my 12yr old son. I was really impressed to clock it at 2989fps.
if you haven't shot or loaded interlocks before, buy a box. they will make you appreciate the quality of Nosler. weight sorting interlock bullets is a huge PITA.
I've been watching the SPS site and loading up when they have bullets I use. I have some 200gr accubonds on the way that will cost...
the superformance loads are smokin fast. the 130gr shoot at 3167 in my 22" .270 win. sometimes they shoot great - sometimes not so great. average groups in my rifle are around 2".
I gave up on the 140gr in my 22" .270. after following the advice of the guys on this board I got the 130gr BT...
the speed is listed with the pics. 2655 with 60.2 and 2670 with 60.5. OAL tip to tip on these was 3.360.
I have shot these with W748, varget, 8208 xbr, and RL15. 8208 has been the fastest powder at 2795 but groups were terrible. however, I shot the 8208 and varget loads with hornady brass. in...
