    6.5 x 54 m.S.

I have scoped my MSch Takedown using Ziegler & Recknagel ‘QD claw mount’ bases and rings to fit a Schmidt & Bender 8x56 scope, 30mm tube. For those interested, I'll attach a few pics here so you see how it's been done. Hopefully it makes sense. Anyway, This year I’m going to get similar mounts &...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

I’m a bit puzzled by the thinking the full stock on an old MSch would shift the zero. Yup, I know it’s wood. Yup, I know humidity can affect wood. But not the wood that’s so old and well seasoned like that used from 1903 to 1950’s manufactured stutzens. That wood is so good, old and stable, it...

Sounds like an excellent hunting trip for your granddaughter Europe & two rifles is always better than one. 7mm08 is a good cartridge too. It would be nice to know which part of Africa the hunt is booked in. But wherever, it definitely sounds a good trip. Africa is magical, especially Kenya...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

Yup, definitely Buddy, Not too much MV with these old MSch stutzens, the bullet doesn’t need it, but good solid strikes that really do the biz. Breaks shoulder bones, does lots of internal damage and drops them on the spot. Close’ish range yup, but hey there’s nothing wrong with that. Getting in...

Ha Scotty, well remembered. Yup DW Karamojo Bell certainly specialised on shooting elephants with a 6.5 ... lots of them! And by the way, my little stutzen is a shooter despite its age (y) haven’t scoped it yet though. That’s next years project. Still, it’s knocked over quite a few feral goats...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

Just one other thing if you’re reloading 6.5x54MSch. .. .. most modern seating dies have seating plug that accomodate pointy bullets. If you’re using the 160gn RN bullet, you need an appropriately shaped seating plug. The pointy ones really don’t help when seating RN bullets. Obvious I know, but...

    Off center flash holes

If it helps, it’s a pleasure. I’m not sure whose dies are helped by the centering method, but certainly RCBS & Hornady dies allow it. I’ve never had the same issue with Redding dies but they’re a slightly different screw in assembly though some thous of an inch of movement are available if...

    Off center flash holes

It's a real pain when that happens. But, here's a thought .... Was your RCBS decapping rod centered properly in the die? It's a simple process to do this correctly. The method is: With the die in your press, Slacken the decap rod nut, so the rod is slightly loose. Run a lubed case into the...

Hi Europe, I have two MSch M1903 rifles in 6,5x54. One a 1922 manufacture ‘Takedown’ currently being re-barreled in the same calibre/certridge & the other a 1936 manufactured ‘Stutzen’. I have used both on red deer and feral goat in Scotland, also I have used both 140gn and 160gn bullets in both...

    Inconsistent concentricity

A very desireable addition the VLD chamfer tool, . .. helps considerably.

    Inconsistent concentricity

I’m a big fan of using an ‘O’ ring under the F/L die lock nut. Set up right it’s brilliant for establishing low run out between case neck & body & that’s a great start helping getting the bullet seated straight. A Wilson seating die & arbor press does the rest.

Do I need a neck sizing die?

If you have an itch .. scratch it! Frankly I wouldn't bother neck sizing if you can F/L resize to your fired case headspace dimesion. It's the case shoulder that just needs a touch in the F/L die to ensure you don't resize too much. Bump the case shoulder Max. .002/.003" usually you can set the...

    100gr vs 120gr in 25.06

I've used the Sierra Prohunter #1620 100gn on red deer hinds and fox out to around 300yds for many years. Very few deer shot inside 100yds, but the performance of the bullet has been fine, although at longer ranges it definitely doesn't provide the quickest kill on the larger deer. So I switched...

    Jura, Scotland

I quite agree, a traditional rifle would have matched the country also the Harris Tweed outfit (Standard everyday clothing for all employed deer stalkers in Scotland) far better. Often, guests, - also known as 'Rifles' choose to wear the traditional Harris Tweed outfits when deer stalking in...

    25-06 and noslers 110gr accubond

I'm fortunate in that I don't have a 'magazine limitation' to contend with on my rifle. Also, I have what would appear to be, a long freebore. Currently though, I'm also testing Viht. N560 propellant with a COAL at 3.204" Comparator dimension with the 110gn AB is 2.688" I haven't yet settled on...

    25-06 and noslers 110gr accubond

I have a 22” barrel & use 53gns IMR4831 with a cartridge OAL of 3.400” using the AB 110gn bullet. That’s a long seating, but still leaves .045” freebore to lands. MV is around 3,130 fps. Primers I use are Fed.210M & Remington brass. Given reasonable to fair range conditions, this combo will...

Brass life when full length sizing?

Spot on. Correctly done and utilising an annealing regime, Norma brass lasts through an amazing number of reloads.

    When to retire Brass ?

F/L resizing to your fired case headspace dimension and annealing regularly will ensure extended case life. I try very hard never to move case shoulders back more than .002”, it’s pretty achievable & significantly helps case life. I’m still reloading good RP brass that’s fourteen years old and...

    25-06 load for the 100 grain hot-cor

A number of propellants perform well with 100gn bullets in .25-06Rem. Personally I use H4350 with the Sierra #1620 Prohunter bullet giving an MV of around 3,250 fps. I use it extensively on red deer hinds in Scotland with excellent results. For the stags though, I favour the Nosler 110gn AB...
