I've never shot a deer or elk that didn't go right down with a Ballistic tip placed behind the shoulder so that's what I'll use on lighter game, but when I don't want to take a chance it will be the AB or PT. How about a 200 BT in 30 for the "slam em to the ground" effect on elk with magnums...
Just for the heck of it I am going to try rl25 with 150 BT's as my 270 has a long, long magazine and long throat. Most of my loading is for fun anymore and I would like to find the "magic load". Anyone with first hand experience with rl25 and the 270 please join in. Thanks for the replies so far!
I made the mistake of reloading for a couple of my friends, but never again! They both had 30-06 rifles and shared the powder, bullets, and primers and I loaded up 6 each for them to try. Both claimed they shot great and wanted that load. One came back from an elk hunt claiming he shot an elk...
I used the 87 grains of 7828 SSC for a buddies 300 RUM with .750 groups with 180 AB's. I tried a bunch of H-1000 loads with no success before I tried the 7878 and couldn't get a group. I never chrono'd the load so I don't know the speed.
As for that ugly barrel nut, It can be your friend if you like to change barrels yourself in a hurry! Just think about the wolf you just shot--you can unscrew the barrel and drive it in the ground for a fence post and just screw on another caliber.
Really, I know you would never...
Most of mine now have the LimbSaver pad, but I like the Decellerator for the looks after It's finished. The Limbsaver is hard for me to get ground perfectly, maybe if it was frozen before grinding? The actual best pad I ever had for recoil reduction was a KickEeze sorbithane pad, but the looks...
I had some break off in the 200 grain AB in the magazine of my 300 Wby. Nosler relaced them for free, said there was a short run that the glue was wrong. They will ask for the product number from the box and give you some replacements. You can't ask for better service!
By the way I've never had...
Both my son and I get great results with RL-25 in our 300 Wby's. His does it with 200 grainers and mine with 180 AB's. Mine also likes 7828 with 168 TSX's, 3310 fps and great groups! That old add for 7828 loads might hold true in a Mark V and real Wby brass, but they would blow primers or worse...
With the right powder for the gun and bullet the 7 mag can shine! I haven't used the 7 in years, but I still have one in my gun safe that shoots the 175 grain Hornady at 2960 with great accuracy. To me that is where the 7 shines, not in the light weight class, it goes to the 264! The last 2 elk...
I used the 7mmRM for many years and killed lots of deer and elk until I read how much better the larger guns were. It seemed to me they killed everything I shot in short order, but can you imagine the embarrassment a 6 point bull would have being shot with such a cartridge! I might just dig one...
I feel it's a total waste of time to practice with loads of unknown accuracy so I shoot off of a rock solid bench with a home made shooting rest. That way I know the load is good, then comes the practice from other positions. As far as practice just for practice sake, I see no reason to wear out...
You might try the 760 in the 06 just for heck of it. That powder does a great job in a lot of the 06's. I've used IMR 4350 in several 06's with the 165 BT and AB with great accuracy, never tried the H4350.
I worked up a load for a model 700 300 saum that shot well under an inch with very little recoil. It was 66 gr of RL-22 and the 180 BT. Lots of deer and some elk have hit the ground with this rifle and load. I never chronographed it, but Nosler shows 2900.
I think the factory used to load much hotter than they do these days and the 220 grain was a bruiser! I'm not very recoil sensitive as I use a 300 Wby with 200 grainers at over 3000 fps all the time. I guess my buddy that owned the rifle back in those days was a little recoil shy after it broke...
I never could figure out why the big 8 never took off! Great cartridge, maybe people figured it was too much of a good thing?? I know the very first year they came out I shot one with 220 gr factory loads and they felt like a bone cruncher! A kick-eeze pad or a Sims would tame it to a usable...
Years ago I had a buddy with a .264 Mag, I made the mistake of telling him I shot 80 gr of H870 in my 7mm Mag. Well he figured it was the same case necked down. He broke the lug off one side of his Savage 110. That's a hot load!!!
Bottom line is: If you really have to have the speed get a 300 UltraMag and suffer the muzzle blast and recoil, barrel wear, ect! If you want a reasonable load that works use the ought-6. I have and use them all, but I started my grandson out on an -06 and he killed his first bull (5 point) and...
You would not believe how many 30-06 165 combos with 22 " barrels never make 2800 fps! Most I have chrono'd were 2780 range and I could easily get 2725 with the 180 grainers--- to me it made more sense to use the 180's! Now 150's usually run 2900- 3000 + in a 22" barrel for me and for deer only...
I had a Burris Signature Select 3-12x44 that I figured would be the best overall hunting scope ever! The thing had no parallax adjust, but would change with the fast focus adjust. I could adjust the focus to make the parallax OK and it would be out of focus. It drove me nuts and I sold it. What...
