I have done a model 70 and a model 700 and have made them work quite well with the tupperware stocks! I do drill holes at different angles and rough up the rest. What seems to be the key to making these stocks work is the stiffening of the fore-end by gluing in wood in the hollows then bedding...
As long as you start low and work up your powder charges you won't have a problem with Remington brass. If I use the tried and true recommended 84.5 grains of 7828 in a 180 AB with Remington brass I get 3280 plus f.p.s. and a real fear of finding the bolt coming out the back of my head! With 87...
In my model 70 in 300 Wby it takes just 84.5 gr of IMR7828 SSC to go 3310 fps but that is the TSX.
It groups really well with that load- well under m.o.a.
I have read some about a solution that you mop your bore with, then shoot to heat cure and it makes the bore easy to clean. Anyone use this and does it work? There are just too many fantastic claims out there to tell snake oil from a miracle cure!
I have a slew of both belted and non belted cartridges, I like them all! I think that if you adjust your dies for your rifle properly it really doesn't matter. I have an old 7mm Mag that is really long on the shoulder length, it also shoots 175 grain bullets at 2960 safely. I really think the...
I have done 3 300 Weatherby load workups (different rifles) and all liked something a little different from each other! The very first was a W.German Mark V with a custom barrel and it liked RL-22 with both 180's and 200 Nosler PT. The second was a Jap Mark V for my son which was really finicky...
Don't get exited, this is an easy fix! Take the de-capper and expander out of the die, then drill the primer pocket out to the size for a 1/4 " n.f. tap. With the proper kit you will get all the stuff to do this so you can just pull the case out of the die using the threads you tapped. I made my...
I have taken many many bulls and bucks with the 180 grainers of some kind with a 300 Wby through the years and my speed was not a lot less than your RUM. I would go with the AB instead of the BT for elk because of the speeds you are clocking, but if you can hit with the 180's, they'll work well!
I don't remember, but probably not! I didn't get it from my 300 Wby with 180 AB's at the same distance (250 yards). Dead bulls and bucks tell the tale!
I have used the 165 AB in a model 700 30-06 for my grandson's first rifle, he took his first elk with it in fine fashion (raghorn bull). He also took his first buck in 2010 with this load and 165 Ballistic Tips. The load is 165 AB/ 58 grains of IMR 4350 and it shoots well under inch groups. My...
Don't give up, you will eventually get it to shoot! Take it to a gunsmith for evaluation before you get too down on it. I have seen some Mark V rifles that need a little up pressure on the barrel, maybe the last inch of the stock. Make sure to bed the action with absolutely no stress! You should...
If you don't have the accumark stock, I would buy a new synthetic with the full length aluminum bedding system. I had a 340 Mark V with the standard synthetic stock and it broke the whole recoil region out. I replaced it with a Bell and Carlson and it became a real shooter. On the good stocks...
I have found some rifles do not like boat-tail bullets. On my son's 300 Mark V we had to go to 200 grain Speer Hot cores with 85 grains of RL-25 to get it to group! Maybe some 200 PT's would be the ticket for you!
I would like to see someone do a test by machining some grooves like the TTSX to see if they would be useful. How bout some 150 gr E-tips with the grooves for my 300 Wby at 3400 or better! My brother-in-law is using the TTSX in 150 in his Wby with fantastic results. I want to buy and use Noslers...
There is one thing I have found for a portable bench to be used on uneven ground: It must be 3 legs, with the leg back by the shooter, adjustable. I found also that if you make a shooting rest it must be made the same way. I am too many miles from a shooting range and I have to use where-ever is...
I have found I can't shoot repeatable groups without a bench that absolutely won't move with the shot. I had to make the top with 2 layers of 3/4 inch plywood, then ended up with 2 inch pipe on all 3 legs. Even after all this I had to brace between the legs. What do you guys use? Anyone have...
I have used this load also and it is easy on the shoulder plus it is really accurate! Kind of a shame to load this monster down to 3150 fps with the 180 though. Funny thing is, the guy I loaded these for also has a 300 SAUM that I worked up loads for also and he uses the short mag over the big...
There was one thing I forgot to mention, When fireforming the 30-06 to 280 you must leave a headspace bump. I always sized mine to fit tight in the 280 because the headspace of the 280 is longer than the 30-06. I agree that it is best to use the right brass to start with.
