shot my new 270 wsm today

I have tried a lot of different flat shooting magnums and have found it's really hard to beat the 2 1/2 " high at 100. At 3 inches I too often shot high in the back while 2 1/2 just flat works for me!

    .300Wby and 180gr AB

If 7828 doesn't do the trick try 87 gr RL-25, mine really likes this load with 180 AB's and my son's Mark V likes 85 gr RL-25 with 200 gr. These are listed as max loads so work them up from below! By the way they both shoot sub 3/4 inch groups. For some reason the 7828 SSC that Ibought just...

    bullet weights and diameter

I have a book in my reloading cabinet written by Jack O'Connor and he talks about going to Africa and using all different calibers. He did say he used a 338 Win Mag with factory 250 gr loads and couldn't really tell the difference in killing power compared to a 30-06 with 180 gr factory loads on...

    7mm rem mag & 160gr accu's

I have an old Speer manual from 1971 that claims they chron'd all the factory loads at that time. There was more than I that hit 3000 plus with a 175. I can't remember what the 150 loads did. I used to have a book with Les Bowman's loads for the 7mm Remington as he was working them up for...

    7mm rem mag & 160gr accu's

I have an old 7 Mag with a larger chamber than the newer rifles, but I can get 2960 with a 175 gr bullet with great accuracy. 68 gr IMR7828 and the 175 Hornady Interlock. This most likely is over pressure in your rifle so work up from way below. I chrono'd some factory loads from Remington made...

    Aging & Hunting

My experience with getting old is a little different than some I guess. I used to become excited when I did a kill, now I get a little teary eyed to look down at what was a beautiful animal just seconds before. I guess you realize your turn is around the corner! I still enjoy the hunt, but maybe...

    Alces alces

DrMike, what are you going to do "in the interm" if you encounter a big old Mean grizzly? A crossbow? I wonder if you scream like a little girl it would run the other direction? Good Luck!

    .270 winchester

Speaking of the 338 Win Mag, brings back memories of my first 7mm Mag. A big sale was on in 1976 and all the Ruger 77's were on sale for $179.95 so I ran in and bought a 7 mag. My next door neighbor went in at the same time and bought a 338 Mag and proudly came over with it to tell me that the...

    .270 winchester

Well, my only experience was 15 years ago with my wife's uncle. He and a friend each had elk tags to fill and all they had were 270's loaded with 150 grain handloads of 58 grains of old Hodgdons 4831. They found 2 elk right at daybreak at around 100 yds and with a single shot each there was an...

    A 300 Problem

I had the same problem with my model 70 Stainless Synthetic in 300 Wby. Shyt can the plastic stock and go with a Boyd's Laminate, then bed the action and free float the barrel. If that doesn't do it, bed the barrel full length too. Mine shoots great with the Boyds and everything bedded. Mine...

    300 WSM+ Max Loads+RL17?

I would never use a load showing ejector marks on the brass! A gunsmith friend called me in to show me the reason why a few years back. He had a Model 70 (push feed) that had been converted to 340 Wby and the customer had brought it to him because he couldn't open the bolt. It seems the guy had...

    times brass is loaded

I always run a home-made stretch checker in my cases before every loading. This warns you of impending case separation which could ruin your day in a hunt or ruin your chamber in target practice. With a little practice you can tell immediately when to chuck your brass. To learn what what I was...

    accubond tip problems

I called Nosler today and they went out of their way to resolve this problem. They are great people to deal with! 8) They are sending me new boxes of bullets for free and let me keep the old ones. Mike said to use them as hollow point if I wanted to. And they have resolved the problem!!

Ok I have hit shooting and relaoding narvana in the 270

I haven't got around to it, but I'm thinking a 150 grain load with a heavy helping of 7828 would give 2900 fps which would take an elk in fair fashion.

Ok I have hit shooting and relaoding narvana in the 270

Did you ever read the article by Jack O'Connor called "The Poor Man's Magnum" or something to that effect? He used the 130 grain partition for elk and claimed there was no elk walking he couldn't take with that cartridge and load. He also used H4831 although it was a different powder than we...

180gr Ballistic Tip in .300 WM for elk ? Opinions

I had the BT's loaded in my 300 win mag for deer a few seasons back and when elk season came around I didn't have anything ready for my other guns. I took the gun with 180 BT's loaded to 3070 fps and preceded to kill my bull with one shot. Bang-Flop I might add. Since that time I've taken many...

Is reloading a dying past time?

I hope reloading isn't dying, I haven't shot a factory shell through a single gun except a 22LR in 25 years! Most of my guns have never seen a factory round.

    270 win and retumbo

There are no pressure signs with my gun, but that doen't mean yours won't have some. Work up slowly! I got this load from a Rifles magazine if I remeber correctly and an older Speer manual has the 150 grain bullet with 58, the 130 at 62 grains. I worked it up with my rifle and it is just fine.
