44 Rem Mag and 240gr JSP Info in Lever Actions

Bit of an update folks. Shot the above at the range. Couple of OK but not great groups. I did notice though I got a lot of dirty cases. Checked the Hodgdon data and their website calls for a large pistol primer. Pretty much every other manual I have and reputable web source calls for a magnum...

.257 120 grain Grand Slam Discontinued?

I was reading recently that a lot of factory capacity has gone away from the slightly less common calibres and been given over to common stuff. So, currently being made hard: .224 6.5mm .277 7mm .30 Cal (Mainly .308" but I think some are producing .311") .338 Cal Things that aren't getting...

    Scout Scope Options?

Here's my current set up with a scout scope: Currently with a Leupold 2.5x28 Scout Scope Skinner carry case: Reckon should be good for a cleaning kit / rod and an MTM box of 50 rds. And when you unpack it: And out on the range: Hoping to develop a plinking load (240gr cast...

    Scout Scope Options?

I've had a couple If you can mount the scope so the occular bell sits in line with the receiver, the Leupold VXR 1.5-5x33 is great. Nice illuminated dot, too. If you want to mount the scope forward of the receiver, then I reckon it is hard to beat the 2.5x28 Leupold (Though I believe they have...

    7mm Ballistic tips and Accubonds

Certainly with our small deer where I am it is reckoned the Accubond can be a bit hard

    Inertia guns 3" shells

I understand with some of the earlier designs of 3.5" guns they were 3.5" guns, only. Something like a Maxus or SX3/4 would be my choice Scrummy

Don't think I paid too much.

I have a 257 Roberts built on an FNH Commercial 98. Like it a lot. Munty

    Scope my .25-06

I am a big fan of Meopta scopes and their 4-16x44 is really quite a good scope. Munty

    Inertia guns 3" shells

That old 835 is quite the thing. Mossberg's idea of how to get 10g payloads out of the 12g gun and I think the first commercial gun chambered for 3.5" shells. I would be tempted to say for recoil reduction get a gas gun, just my 2c. Scrummy

44 Rem Mag and 240gr JSP Info in Lever Actions

Well, I fancied a lever action and why not have a John Moses Browning design that is also a takedown. ;) Quality seems good. I have taken the rifle out hunting with factory ammo so managed to wear the rubber finish a bit (However, our highseats / treestands are metal so can be hard on stocks)...

44 Rem Mag and 240gr JSP Info in Lever Actions

They seem to have a good reputation locally. Hodgdon's data for the 240gr JSP and H110 uses a Remington 2 1/2 primer which is large pistol so should be OK I think.

44 Rem Mag and 240gr JSP Info in Lever Actions

Understood. Hodgdon states the 240gr JSP should be loaded 23-24gr for the Nosler 240gr JSP @ 1.600" and a large pistol primer. Certainly will put a stiff crimp in. If nothing else for the tube loading in addition to getting the powder lit. M

44 Rem Mag and 240gr JSP Info in Lever Actions

Thanks Darkhorse. It does seem that soft points get more use in carbine loads than hollow points. I will certainly try with H110. M

    E-Tips and 257 Roberts

Yes, think I will seat just under the "expansion control groove" (apparently it's not a cannelure...). Mine is based on an old 7x57 so a "standard" length action. Should be able to seat a fair way out and still get ~ 2 diameters seated in the neck @ ~0.530" Scrummy (PS, had a look at seating...

    E-Tips and 257 Roberts

You may have a point. When I had my "Bob" built I did ask for it to be throated for 117 gr and 120gr bullets so we might get away with not seating them so far into the case. More experimentation required I think Scrummy

160 gr AB verses a black bear

I was wondering on a bear load for my 7x64. I have a 175gr Nosler Partition but wondered about something a bit flatter shooting like the 160gr Accubond. Pictures please! Munty
