    Flute or not flute

Benchrest shooters want rigid, accurate barrels. They don't drag them up and down mountains all week. Fluting is a lightening compromise that may not stand up to the heat of competition, or it may. Why take the chance if you're a competitor?

    Accuracy issue

John, What is the distance from your loaded ammo to the rifling? If it's a lot (over .03) you can lengthen the cartridge Over All Length as much as the magazine will allow. If that fails to help try Barnes TTSX or Speer Hot core. Barnes will probably give you the best accuracy. I've had 4...

    7MM RUM freebore problem

I started off with RL25 and went to Retumbo and I'm using IMR 7828 Now. I've used Fed 215 and CCI 250 primers. I've tried 168 NABLR 160 NAB 140 NAB and Hornady 139 BTSP in every configuration. The accuracy went to a steady 1.5" If I lengthened the NABLR 168 gr. OAL to 3.8" It won't fit the...

    7MM RUM freebore problem

It is confusing I admit. I decided to get out of the 7 RUM to generate some Christmas cash and I still had all the brass, dies etc. I saw the Savage at half the Rem's price so I could get the cash I needed for Christmas and the 280 re chamber and still have a 7 RUM. Sometimes being retired...

    7MM RUM freebore problem

I'm maxed out at SAAMI 3.6" and I've tried 160 gr. Accubonds but haven't tried but one load. The frustration here is that I have a 7 RUM Rem 700 and it loves every load and the 168 ABLR especially. I had plans to sell it, use this Savage, and finish modifying a 280 to Ackley Improved.

    7MM RUM freebore problem

I've had freebore issues before, most recently with a Kimber and I ended up going with a blunter bullet but based on your findings I'll keep working on loads. Have you any special hints on the loads you've found. Over all length, velocity or bullet type? I've also only had one rifle I couldn't...

    7MM RUM freebore problem

I picked up a 7 RUM in a Savage 110 and after some initial load work I thought I had a sub MOA 2 shot group with NABLR 168gr bullets. WRONG! 5 shots 5" at 100yds. I checked the freebore and was astounded to see the 168gr at 4.05" OAL to the lands. The 160gr at 3.865". The magazine is 3.60"...

    New Lightweight Savage Rifle

Since they offer it in the 270 then the 280 AI would be a nice option as would the 260. How about the 338 Fed or 358 Win?

7 RUM. And 168gr ABLR. Pet load??

My Rem 700 RUM likes the 168gr NABLR with 91 gr RL 25 Fed 215 primers RP cases. OAL 3.63 Very accurate out to 925 yds. 3355 fps. It shoots sub MOA. I have a new 7 RUM I just got and I havn't tried it yet. It's a Savage 110. That's a very hot load. Work your way up to it if you want. Good...

28 nosler vs 7mm Rem Ultra Mag

The 7mm RUM I have shoots a 168gr NAB at 3440 fps. Accurately I believe that's notably faster than the 28 Nosler. As far as the commercial it says fastest 7mm on your dealer's shelf. They don't catalog the 7 RUM in the Remington catalog any more.

    Accubond vs Ballistic Tip

I've never used the ballistic tip bullets. I went from Sierra game kings to Nosler partitions when I got a 300 wby rifle. I was a little put off by the exit hole damage of the partitions so I tried the Accubond in everything I had when they came out and after 10 elk and a lot of deer with...

    Coyote vs Mountain Lion

Wow!! Fish and wildlife here claim that the mountain lions are killing wolves and they are 150 lbs plus. I'm surprised about the coyote doing so well.

    .280 AI is awesome!!

Congrats on the elk and buck. Sorry about the "OUCH". I'm glad to hear about the 280's successes and when mine is ready the elk of Montana will get another run for their money.

    280 AI brass

If I can find some I'll try them. I like the ABLRs in my 7 Ultra. Very accurate and they hang on to energy like crazy.

    280 AI dies Which one?

Thank you, I ordered the Redding dies in 280 Ackley improved. I ordered some Nosler brass and I'll try fire forming the WW nickel plated brass later.

    280 AI dies Which one?

I went to order some 280 Ackley Improved dies and discovered there are different versions of the wildcat. I'm going with the SAAMI spec chambering like Nosler uses. What die set should I be ordering?
