I'm sure you're you've tried this idea, but I found that when I switched from RL25 to Retumbo my loads became more consistant and accurate for me when I used CCI 250 primers instead of the Fed 215 I was using in all 4 different RUM calibers. It was when I ran out of the fed 215s that I...
The 3-9x33 Leupold Ultralight with the Long range reticle sits on my 338 Fed. Kimber 84 Montana in Talley lightweight rings. It looks and balances right and shoots out to 500 yds with sufficient accuracy. I've tried a couple of other fairly light scopes on it and they look big and feel out of...
Thanks Scott
I know Berger had thickened their jackets on the target bullets and the hunting bullets are the older, thinner jackets so I guess Nosler just did it right the first time.
I wonder what the minimum velocity the Ballistics tips open at. I believe the Accubonds will open down to 1800...
Since the hunting popularity of Berger bullets is based on their high ballistic co-efficient and ability to violently come apart in a chest cavity at long range, I was wondering if anyone has tried that with the Nosler custom competition bullets. In fact has anyone done any penetration testing...
The load you're setting up will do just fine. The 130 gr TTSX will weigh more than a 150 cup and core when it's over and you won't have to worry about it coming apart on a shoulder shot. You know I'm an accubond guy but when I lived in California I had to use TSX and TTSX for pigs in the condor...
With the 150 gr. bullet 200 yds. is ideal for a 30-06. You can use Superformance loads and go to 250 but why. Antelope are small and not hard to kill just hard to hit at long range. What you need is the most accurate load you can find or develop, a good scope with good bullet drop compensation...
I've had case bulge problems before but they were seating die adjustment problems. I had set the die for a roll crimp on another bullet and forgot to seat the die out a little farther, I had only adjusted the bullet seating out. That really sucked because I ran about 25 rounds before I caught...
I'm using an OAL of 2.83 with the 160 gr. TTSX bullets. I haven't had a problem with bulging with either federal .338 Fed. brass or Win 308 resized to .338 Fed. I don't think I could get any more powder in the case though. I don't crimp the load and haven't had a problem with bullet creep (yet)...
I've been loading for the 338 Fed in my Kimber 84 Montana and with the Minimal blind magazine I have case capacity issues also. I've found some loads that work well with my 22" barrel.
I worked up the 160 gr load today and I'm pretty jazzed about it. It is in the 7 mag realm for sure with a...
You have the right idea Rich. I have issues. I load about 50 rounds for each caliber but then I load another 50 with a new (latest greatest) load or bullet and then after I get that right I switch scopes around on the rifles to match performances so I can sight in yet again. I hate the down...
The rifle is light and has the power but because of the long free bore and short magazine I'm having to use the 200 gr Hot Core bullets (2600 fps) to get near the rifling . I can see where the Kimber gets a reputation for poor accuracy. I'd rather use Abs or Parts. I get better results with 185...
Being older has it's moments of humility, this is one of them. I did mean 338
I did drop back to the 225 gr Accubond which I've had great results with at 3200 fps.
Oldtrader3 probably hit on the problem. I must have hit to one side and took out one lung or something similar.
JD338 says...
Last season I loaded up some 300 gr Accubonds in my 338 RUM. I figured with a BC of .720 and a velocity of 2825 fps I'd have a deadly long range machine. 6-24 Vortex scope and I was ready. My shot came at a cow elk toping a ridge straight away at about 340 yds. ( I missed the first two shots as...
Welcome to the forum that feels like the old gun shop that we and our forbearers used to hang around and swap info and stories at. It's a friendly place with a wealth of knowledge and experience and nice folks that are happy to share it with us.
The powder I settled on was Ramshot TAC. I have a Kimber Montana with a short magazine and long free bore. I'm stuck with 200 gr. Speer Hot core or 185 gr Barnes TSX. because of the long jump to the lands.
I believe you will be able to use the Partition or Accubond to better advantage. Here...
Unlike Frankenstein's creation I don't that one has a defective brain. I think it's ready, willing and able to do your bidding. I'd love to be there when you try it out.
It is a trade off. I ended up using Speer hot core 200gr 338 bullets in my Kimber Montana (338 Fed) because with higher ballistic co-efficient bullets just wouldn't group worth a darn.
