Dr.Mike I need some QL's please...
I need to use up some R17.
I have some coming in and need to rotate my older stock.
300 WSM
176 gr A-tip Match # 30717
Gm215m primers
R17 powder
300wsm
168 gr. Nosler Ballistic Silvertip
GM215m primer
R17
300WSM
168 gr speer BTHP Match
GM215M primer...
I used 67.0 grains of H4350 in a 300wsm with a Fed GM215m and the velocity I got was the following..
The bullet was a Hornady ELD-m 168 grain
The Hornady book never gives a velocity to the exact fps but to the 100th...
They listed this load at 3100 in the book with the charge/powder/bullet...
45 grains of imr4350 and 140gr BT's were by far my best load.
17 rounds, one ragged hole...then it walked...after a cleaning...right back to the one ragged hole.
That said it is one cartridge that is just inherently accurate with many powders and differing charges.
I hear ya...
but...
I know a lot who will only use BR-2 or GM205M ...
Asking them they'll act like their rifle won't even fire without a match primer. 🙄🙄🙄
Finally got some range time...
I did the loading and my one son was shooting. He's not the best of rifle shooters yet...but he's improving rapidly.
That said I was curious if we'd see a difference with 3 different seating depths.
I loaded up 3 strings of 4 rounds @ different lengths...
Whatever primer they have available at the time is what they throw in for testing.
Maybe I'm the black sheep but I have no issue using a GM215M in place of any mag primer.
Lastly...
Sometimes people don't have the equipment or simply not good enough to see a difference using a match primer...
I used to be employed in the industry and heavily involved with Federal executives. Spent a lot of time talking shop, specs and talking deals. Some in the office and some while enjoying entertainment with refreshments.
Gold Medal Match primers are definitely different.
It isn't a marketing...
I hear ya on having an excess of a powder and trying to use it if possible....
And sometimes you can get a square peg to get into a round hole but the fit isn't optimum.
I say again, Alliant, the mfg of said R16, is in the business of selling powder.
When you pull up R16 on their website they...
I can't speak to those specific tin pants.
Did they have a problem run on some material? Who knows. I'm in business and mishaps can happen.
It's how it's handled after the fact that matters to a degree as well.
Have you reached out to them? I have found Danner and Filson to be very...
as I mentioned above you have to look very carefully and you can in fact find stuff made right here by our beloved American brethren...
As example...
Here is a coat that's I'd take over the one you posted...
And it is made right here..
Just have to take a little extra time and look...
Double tin is what you would want.
I last purchased some double tin chaps around 2005. They're like iron.
I can't say of the double tin quality of today but I can tell you there was a big difference between single tin and double tin.
It's easy to confuse the two as often times they're are...
Filson is no different than most other once great ALL AMERICAN companies.
The quality is there but you have to be very careful when shopping these places. Example..
I only wear Danner boots. Made in USA danners. Work or hunt...USA Danners for me. At one time this was all they made but not...
I don't mean to sound malicious as I am saying all this in the most mild of ways...
but the climate ordeal always makes me roll my eyes.
Our industry..possibly more than any other is the trendiest industry I swear on it.
In other words if the right author makes an article in a gun rag about...
I echo what Guy says....
That being said, I nosed around a bit and there seems to be some chatter about Grand powder in the 257 wby but it appears it's only like what you are seeking. Load data and people asking about it.
It is right beside Ramshot Magnum on the burn chart....which is kind of...
Don't ASSUME anything.
Let's look at some data first.
I dont see any velocity listed from your weapon so what is your actual FPS you're finding on an actual chronograph?
Let's start there.
How far below are you getting with your platform and handload versus published data?
Real world...
To add....
Here is the actual manufacturer of Reloader 16, Alliant...
This is every caliber they have a recipe for...
What cartridge don't we see here?
22-250
I'm not saying this tells the whole story but if that powder(r16) worked well in the 22-250 , no matter the bullet weight, the mfg...
And that's the thing...
Almost any powder can propel a bullet from any case....
The results are the tell all.
Good, bad, indifferent...
If things were that simple we'd have a handful of powders that would work in every cartridge made.
