I've used the AMAX/ELDM the last 15 years for all my big game hunting. However, my shots are typically 300+ where the impact velocities are lower, and that's where they start to shine. They are a highly frangible bullet, but no more so than the beloved Berger VLDs. Up close you definitely want...
Leaning more towards the 6.5-300 just for the simple fact it would see elk, and I'm not a huge fan of 25 cal for elk, nor really even 6.5s for that matter. However I do realize the 6.5 is by far the better choice over the 257 because of the heavier bullets and the extra horsepower. If elk wasnt...
If you ever make it over to Hermiston, just let me know! I've heard IMR4198 is kind of a unicorn powder these days, but I honestly don't have any other rifle/use for it. It was always strictly for my triple deuce. And since I just rebarreled that rifle to a long range 223, IMR4198 really serves...
Great interview. I love the part where Adam says "Well I don't hunt with the 6.5 Creed" 🤣
But on a more serious note, this has got me looking into another Weatherby, more than likely another Vanguard, but I'm thinking 257 WBY or 6.5-300 WBY with a 4-14x Leupold for a lighter packing rifle for...
IMR4198 and a 40g VMAX was what I used in my R700. 3500fps and 1/4-3/8 MOA every time from a bench at 100 yards. Was a great little dog calling rifle. Killed probably 30 or so with it over the years.
Well I took my Rem 700 222 to the smith yesterday morning to do some work and just picker her up tonight. What started out as an early 700 ADL is now a long range trainer in 223 Wylde set up specifically for the 80g ELDMs. It served its purpose for many years as a calling rig for coyotes...
Good stuff! I've also ran similar tests at 50/100/200/300 yards with about 10 different match loads. It gets pretty interesting past 100 just an FYI...Some stuff that shoots 1 hole groups at 50 doesn't always shoot good at even 100 yards, let alone 200/300. It's a super fun way to spend a day at...
We used the 180g NBTs for around 10-15 years and probably close to 100 elk, before nosler came out with the 200g ABs and I switched everyone over to it just for the added penetration insurance up close, and the added BC for longer range up there which is typical. The 180g NBTs still worked...
Sounds like a lot of work and money to reinvent the wheel to shoot a 100g bullet at 3200fps when a 25/06 will easily get 33-3400fps as is.
But, if it's a short action, why not a 25 creedmoor or 25-284? Plenty of good brass and same if not higher velocities.
Then again, I know exactly what you...
Pretty good performance I'd say.
I personally opt for the 200g AB on elk size game with 300 Mags. They've exited for us on elk 90% of the time from 50-900 yards.
Need to try some Eley Tenex or Lapua Center X in my rifle just to see what it's really capable of. But gosh dang it's hard to pay $20/50...I'm fine with SK for what I'm doing. It's not a BR rifle. Just for steel shooting and mechanics.
