Hey Jim -
I love HS! I've hand loaded it for years for duck hunting and have mostly shot 2 3/4" #4 HS loads for my ducks. That stuff is the BOMB! but damn is it high!!!! I use to buy 7 lbs for about $90. I think it is about $150 - $160 now for 7 lbs of it.
I may have to try some of...
David...how does one determine a starting load for say a 140 or 150 gr partition? What about the 140 gr AB? I'd love to try the Superformance in my .280 but have no idea where to start my loads and max loads with that stuff?
I don't have a pattern pic but I shoot a Beretta Pintail, Jellyhead choke, and Kent 3" Diamond Shot. The combo seems to work pretty well but I'd like to try some 2 3/4 and 3" #4 hevishot in it. I just need to reload some one evening.
That is the same setup I am leaning to as well, Jim. I like the higher case capacity of the original Ackely version. I just don't understand why Nosler, or anyone for that matter, would change the dimensions on something that worked perfectly. Perhaps I am showing my ignorance but was the SAAMI...
 I never realized there were two different 280 AI versions out there!! I wonder if the .280AI ever becomes a mass produced cartridge which standard will be the one accepted or official? The real .280 Ackley Imp or the Nosler/SAAMI .280 AI?
Damn, Fotis!!!! I need to get a job like you have!!
I am lucky to be able to buy one new gun a year!
That is a nice looking rifle and truly a great cartridge. I envy you with this one!
CL - I know that a lot of the eastern land is private but most of the ranchers probably offer trespass fee hunts for the antelope. Pop might be the one to PM about WY since he lives and hunts it.
I'm hoping my son and I draw next year for a decent unit. It will be a graduation gift for my son.
Jake - I'm using 225 SST as practice and barrel break-in bullets myself. I wouldn't hunt with them, they are just too soft as others hand said, but I don't think you'll go wrong shooting them for practice. I hope you get a hunting bullet you like for your 338WM!
Mike - #1 would be a 150"+ mule deer. I did take my first muley in 2009 but it was only about 130". Having thought about it some though....maybe a nice black bear should be #1!!
Oh I know about Trijicon......I was just hoping good old Leup would understand that battery powered isn't the way to try to get into the lighted reticle game.
That is a very nice finished product, Guy!! The color is beautiful and it makes me want to move black bear to #2 on my list of importance (since I've never taken one).
One would think that with the technology available today that batteries would no longer be required in a scope!! Love the idea of lighted reticles from Leupold but hate the ancient technology.
How does one determine a starting & max load for this stuff if no data has been done yet? For example...how do I get load data for this stuff in my 338-06 and various bullets?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I've got 1 pt for mule deer and antelope in WY but I am thinking about trying to get an antelope and deer tag in a unit that doesn't require any points. I'm not looking for a huge trophy but a representative 13" antelope or 150" range muley would be awesome!
The 140AB in my standard .280 is a .4" and .5" inch bullet as well! I think the 140AB and .280 are a perfect match made in heaven!
Those are ALL superb animals!
Just now chiming in but that is an AWESOME looking rifle, Scotty!! I know your son is very proud of it! Get him a ghillie suit and he's on his way to sniper training.
I know the two of you will have a blast shooting it and spending time together in the field.
