Thank you for the feedback and opinions my friends. I think one of the two giant predators - Grizz or Brownie - will be the animal I choose to go after if I can pull off a hunt in the next 2 years.
Thanks fellas! The bear cost was actually surprising to me. I've been digging around some outfitters and it looks like you could do a grizzly for about $10-$13K if you choose the right outfitter. I don't know which would be better - a fall or a spring hunt. The price for grizz seems to be a...
If you had one opportunity where you had $20K for airfare, outfitter cost, tags, etc., to spend on a lifetime hunt for one of these big 3 which would you be inclined to choose?
I have a 338-06 and love it so far. I haven't had a chance to wring it out yet, or harvest anything with it yet, but I plan to really get in some shooting in the next month or so. I did speak with Phil Shoemaker about the 338-06 and Hornady 250gr RN as a brown/grizz bullet and rifle. His...
Like many others here, my dream hunt would be in Alaska for giant moose and interior grizzly for about 10 -14 days. If not in Alaska then the Yukon territory of Canada. Flying into the hunt area and staying in a rustic log cabin would be the ultimate hunt and experience in my book.
I was browsing Gunbroker and found that someone is selling new (surplus) Weatherby Mk V 338-06 factory barrels for $100 each. If you have a standard Weatherby action, and you are thinking of rebarreling, this looks like an affordable way to get a 338-06!
Fluted...
Nicely done, Joel! I like Scotty's spotter and I'm sure he's enjoying it as well!
Are you guys shooting on private property or is it a gun range? I like the set up you've got as it looks like you can get in some longer range work there.
I've been afraid to weigh my Ruger M77 with a 23" Pac-Nor barrel (in 338-06), and 2.5-8x36 Leupold, but I had them just copy the contour of the Ruger 22" factory barrel so I wouldn't have to do any stock mods. My guess is that my rifle weighs close to 8 lbs. but I always figured the less I know...
I am familiar with the PBR concept and I appreciate the comments. That is exactly what I was thinking. I usually set up my rifles to be 2" high at 100 yds. Once I get my final loads I'll shoot them at 100 yds (2" high) and then shoot them at 200 yds to compare to the ballistics program data...
Good deal and it all makes sense. I may just get the standard duplex reticle, get my primary load ballistics from my reloads at 100 yds, run them through my Sierra ballistics program, and then compare them with 200 yds shots.
I will probably never hunt where I might have to shoot 400-500 yds. I...
Someone help a newbie out on the BDC reticles.... I understand they are for various distances but how do you find out what the 2nd and 3rd horizontal lines are for distance? I know that if I zero at 200 yds the center cross hair is for 200 yds. How do I find out what the other crosshairs...
I was leaning to their 338-06 when available but the cost for 25 rds ($60) just turns me off too much! Especially when I can buy 20 rds of Norma or Weatherby brass for $38. That is 5 less rds but it is also $23 cheaper. I guess I will have to stick with Norma and Weatherby for my 338-06
I'm waiting too, Scotty. I'm really liking that 2-10x40 ZA5 with BDC reticle for my .280! I've got a 3-9x40 Conquest on it right now but I like the idea of the 2-10x40 for it as well.
Thank you for the follow up report, Mike. I had high hopes for the 165 gr bullets in your 300WM as well. I still my buy 25 of the .338 bullets just to see what they will do in my 338-06. I just had the trigger lightened to 3 lbs (that is low as the gunsmith would go for me, citing liability...
There is just something special looking about the stainless & wood M70 FWT! I have a FWT myself but it is the gloss blued version. I am thinking of rebarreling mine and then have the barrel and receiver bead blasted or Cerakoted in matt black. I've got a matt Conquest 3-9x40 on it right now and...
Great photos, Scotty!
Question on shooting water jugs - Is it easier to do it at 20 yds vs 100 yds? How far do you space them apart or do you just line them up back to back? Do you set them up on a sawhorse or something? All I have is a regular shooting range with a dirt berm to stop the...
I've given serious consideration to trying the NF bullets! I look forward to your comments and observations, Mike. I'm looking at getting the sample packof 20 of the 200gr .338 bullets to try in my 338-06. I'd like to compare them to my 210gr PT's.
