I have a M7 Youth in 6mm Rem, and in the last two weeks I have picked up a take-off .260 Rem stainless barrel (20") and a take off synthetic stock (from another .260). So I am at $125 parts and shipping, and I should have a good deer rifle with some $$$ to the gunsmith.
Look around, folks are...
I am looking for deer this year:
Oregon blacktail deer
Colorado mule deer (draw)
Montana mule deer (draw)
I probably won't bother to apply in the California draw again.
My Colorado 2009 Big Game brochure arrived at the house today!

An excellent story, it brought me right into the event.
I have used the Nosler Partition since 19(mumble), and I continue to gain more confidence in them with use. The subletly of the design is great.

I started Rocky Mountain mule deer hunting with a Rem M700 7mm Mag and the screw-turned Nosler Partition 160 gr in 19(mumble). Over the years I stayed with that bullet, although Nosler makes it in a different way now.
If I wanted to shoot lighter bulleys I would move to a smaller cartridge case...
I wrote a review of this book when it came out.
I liked the content too, but the book -- as a book and separate from its content -- needs help.
Things I included in my review notes were:
1. Poor editing ("ACKNOWNLEDGEMENTS" in the frontis is my favorite);
2. No details of composing at the end...
I am now using the Leica CRF 1200, and this fall I ranged deer out to 650 yards directly. (I didn't go further because I didn't see any animals further out.) You could get their 900 for a cheaper price. I like the unit's package, it fits in my shirt pocket, and the small strap goes around your...
www.hunts.net is Rich LaRocco's website, you can check the outfitters he is representing there. I used to work for him, and he is tough on outfitters, only keeping those who don't have problems.

Your .35 Whelen (or .358"X63mm) should produce higher velocity than your 8mm'06 (.323"X63mm) because you are expanding the gas from firing in a larger bore and that converts to more work done on the bullet moving down the bore and a higher velocity with bullets of the same weight.

I have hunted around Grand Junction for the last three years, but I have not seen such a mule deer buck. More reason to keep at it!
Thanks for posting that photo...jim
RR1,
I have used several low-power variables on .375s (H&H, Steyr and Ruger), and gradually moved up to 3-9X40. I have a Trijicon mounted now, and it would do very well with your .375 RUM.
I would like to use one of them. Please let us know how it does for you (I like the .375s). I am thinking...
In the last century I decided to standardize on the Talley mounts and rings, and I am not sorry to have done that. I have used both their steel products and the aluminum.
Recommended.

It sounds like someone was going to build a 7X57 on that action.
I have a commercial M98 that is studying to be a .257 Roberts.
I have a .280 Rem, and it is enough of a good thing. I will bet the regular cartridge feeds better than the Ackley version with its lack of taper. ;)
