Again, I admit, I am ignorant of the different deer activities and patterns in the deep south, where I now live. However, in Md. and Pa. I have seen lots of big bucks and lesser deer moving and feeding in rain.
I just got a call from one club member who tells me that all the other members have...
Wi. teacher, Point well taken.
I have to admit, I did want to see how much baiting would really bring in deer. The only other reason, for me, is that while I have been seeing deer, I have had to hold off shooting bucks with less than 8 points and with antlers not outside the ears. This has put...
After successfully hunting White Tail deer in a number of states, I find that there is more that I do not know about White Tail, than what I do know.
I am hunting in SE Ga. for the first time and am allowed to use bait. I am allowed two bucks and three doe. I already have taken two deer. The...
Sorry to have misspoken, regarding the Bal. Tip being "bonded". However, I do know that it opens up very well and does retain a high degree of it's weight. I hit a tad high on a small deer, standing in shady woods this season, estimating that the deer was out farther. The 120 Nos. BT tore into...
I carried a Mauser in .270Win. for many years. One of Jack O'Connor's last writings claimed that if old Jack were starting over, he'd get a rifle in .280Rem. I had for some time believed that the 7mm bullet flies about as good, or better than the bullets on either side of it.
In an unexpected...
After my initial try at the "ink on the bullet" OAL test, I have never dumped propellent into the action. I hold the rifle, muzzle up and carefully extract until I can see that the bullet is still in the case. If it is not, I grasp the case, as it extracts and remove it, with the mouth still up...
You could use the old, coat the bullet with a fiber tipped pen and push the OAL back until no ink is disturbed.
First, get a number of cartridges ready to load, with propellant already in the case. Barely seat the bullet in the case. Put the cartridge into the chamber and slowly but firmly...
Dr. Mike, nice job at a rapid rate.
The 280Rem with that sort of bullet is, after all, the sexiest of all cartridges. I like it's slender, curvy, length and the way the light reflects off it's round, firmness. <8^))

I agree with Guy. Pick one bullet and stick to it. In your circumstance, it sounds to me like you should work up an good load that suits your range needs, using the 160gr. AB in that 280AI. Shooting out to your own max. range, you should cleanly kill what you are after.
I do not agree with...
From two years experience loading 7mm-08 for the wife and 280Rem. for myself. Both used 120gr. BT. To date: 3 mule deer, 3 pronghorns, 2 whitetails and 14 wild hogs. All one shot kills from 35 yards to 350 yards. Since we are not going after bears, or bigger game, we will stick with the Nosler...
Dr. Mike, thanks for that response. I will work down with the IMR4198 that I have on hand (2 lbs.). I really wanted to use IMR4350, as a friend who no longer hand loads gave me a 20 lb. can, unopened! However 4350 does not appear to be good with 45-70 and at this point, with prices so high, I...
I range tested a number of loads in the falling block 45-70 new model Win. 1885. This 125th Comm. rifle comes with a good recoil pad. It seemed that all I got from loads heavier than 42gr. of IMR4198, using the Berry 350gr. bullet, was a harder thump from recoil. 42gr. to 44gr. was very...
Yeah, I agree with everyone who spoke of more expensive equipment that will cut my group size. However, I have killed deer at a measured 400+ yards with my 280Rem. and while not world class, it is my own personal limit for taking game. My bull elk was just over 300 yards head on, coming up a...
But I thought that more recently, the idea was to get more jump than .025? Most shooters are recommending dropping back more than that in order to get better groups. I am no expert, but I try to listen to those who are.
I am shooting a recently made Win. Mod. 1885 falling block rifle, in 45-70. Looking for better loads. However, I would like to stick with propellent that I have on hand, given the recent rise in prices.
Primers: Large Rifle; Win. FC or CCI
Cases Win. and FC
Bullet: Berry 350gr. RS.
Don't need...
In terms of OAL for 30-40 Krag cartridges, the only data I am finding is for the original US Army cartridge, at 3.10" for the 220gr. RN bullet, measured from base to tip.
I am loading Sierra 180gr. SP BT and figuring about 3.148" OAL as that has me a good distance from the lands.
My starting...
I am asking these questions in all seriousness and not just because I have nothing else to do! <8^)) Over the past two days, I have preped many hundreds of rifle cases and loaded about half of them.
I have an E. Brown Model 97D single shot rifle in 6mm Bench Rest Magnum. For those who do not...
Thanks for the tip on Wilson, but I would not spend $200, unless I were 20 years younger! <8^)) I have wondered how some shooters get such close tolerance on trimming.
I do not compete in shooting. I do enjoy making tiny clovers with my varmint rifles. Variances of .005" on trim length...
