One more update. Replaced the scope with another one and went back out yesterday. Looks like I'll need a shim under the front base. With the scope all the way up, I was hitting a foot below poi. This at 100 yards.
Any ideas for a good item to use as a shim?
Updating this one. After a fire that burned part of my garage (and ruined a bunch of my reloading gear), I managed to cobble together some loads using 7828 ssc - 50 grains. Took it out and the scope crapped out on me.
Put an old steel tubed Weaver on it and I'll play with it some more this...
I respectfully disagree with 1Shot about some barrels not liking a certain bullet. Twist rate would be the only exception I can think of.
I went through: CFE223, Tac, Varget, IMR4064, 322, and several others before trying Benchmark. There I found a load for both the AR and my bolt 223.
It's...
Nice, pretty and well done mount!
My deer come from around Melvin/Brady area. McCulloch County. We've got too many axis on the place but I'll hold off on those until after the whitetail season is done in January
Still have to get some hamburger for the freezer and, after the season ends, some axis steaks, so, I'll be going on into '19 to make sure the freezer is full.
Filmjunkie, I just might still have a set. It may take a day or two for me to go to storage (garage is being repaired after a fire and everything is in storage). I'll check and message you back. If you find some in the meantime, go for it.
I took this one opening weekend in Nov with my lab pup as my 'assistant'.
6.5x55 Swede, 142 LRAB at a whopping 122 yards.
Took another doe the second weekend, no pics on her, and a Fallow doe the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Again, no pics.
Today was the first time I could get out there...
I have one of their 'gen 1' range finders and have had no problems using it with heavy gloves on. No idea how they'd work in really cold weather. Coldest I've used mine has been in the low 20's.
I picked up a Savage 1920 in 300 Sav. Had to investigate what I had. Here's some more info on a rather interesting firearm;
During WWI, the US wasn't able to make enough of the '03 Springfields and issued a call for another maker to help them out with a different firearm. Savage's entry was what...
Started out with 100 grainers with my first 25-06. After getting tired of having 4" exit holes and ruining meat, I switched to 120's. After more than 3000 rounds down the barrel I couldn't make my 'old' loads work. Switched to the 110's and a different powder and went right back to dropping deer...
I run mine on everything from bull-barrels down to the thinnest barrels. Like stated earlier, thin barrels need constant tightening of the strap. I'm thinking of finding some type of inner tube type of rubber band to see if that will hold it in place better. Other than that, I prefer it over the...
Running two 25-06's with 7977 and the 110. One is in the 3000 round count area and I'm chasing the lands. COAL is 3.3" and is .1 off the lands. Still puts 3 in .75" if I do my part. When this one gets to where I can no longer load them in the magazine, I'll re-barrel. This one is pushing them at...
Tossing my .02c worth in to the fray here. I have two 25-06's. One is a first year 700 ADL the other is a pawn shop rescue that has a Douglas barrel on. Between the two there are more than 5000 rounds through those barrels.
The first one shot 100 gr Speers and Sierra's for years. I loaded it...
I ran a similar test trying to find a load for my 223. After 7 different powders I finally ran into one that gave me a 4 load flat spot. Loaded for the one in the middle and I have my load!
May give this a whirl when I run out of RL 33 for my 264. Though, if it only gets a 140 gr pill up to 3000 fps, I'll probably stick with RL33.
In any case, it should prove interesting to read what others are getting in various cartridges.
For that sized cartridge, I'd run .3 or even .5 grain differences. If you can take it out to 300 you would more than likely see separations as well.
Another thought, I did this with my 223 bolt gun, run each of the 10 or so rounds over a chronograph and look for 'flat' spots. These are areas...
It has the 'Metford' rifling. Kind of an oblong looking view down the pipe. Running a cleaning rod with patch & jag I counted 1-10" twist. Wanting to run the 129 ABLR.
The 1st model Newton's were all built by Mauser though there aren't any markings I've seen on this one to say so.
SJB, you...
Ok, I've got the rifle. Finally got some dies. Making brass out of .270 cases (I've got 25-06 rifles). I have H & I 4831, I4350, RL23 and others. Just trying to figure out where to start a load.
I have a few of the 123 gr Scenars to play with as well as nearly 2 boxes of 129 gr ABLR. Any...
Was at the local gun show yesterday looking for .270 brass to convert. (one guy wanted $125 for 120 1x fired 270 cases - found 60 for $20). Saw a set of 30 Newton RCBS dies in a box. Thought about grabbing them. The guy was asking $120 for them IIRC
