I did a 'test' on different cleaning products on one of my 25-06's that was telling me it was time to clean. This rifle, with the loads developed for it, was shooting .6" groups. After going through 6 different cleaning products I was down to bare metal.
It took 28 rounds to get the rifle back...
I too have shot the donor, twice. The first one was a 308 I was going to do something stupid with that I thought I 'needed'. It's still a 308 and in the safe.
The second was a 30-06 that plans were to make into a 6.5x55. I shot it. It shot ok but nothing to get excited about. Off to Pac-nor and...
Not much to report.
6.5 142gr LRAB from a 264 wm. 3250 mz - elk @ 137 yards through both shoulders. Exit wound about silver dollar sized. Blood shot meat about 3" across under the hide.
Same bullet from a 6.5x55 @ 2800 MV - axis doe (about 140 lbs on the hoof) entrance behind the near...
Probably a winchester 70 if I were starting today, that or the Weatherby Vanguards. If it were a choice of ANY manufacturer, my choice would be simple. Newton Rifle - one in each cartridge he designed.
I found the nickel plated to be harder to size in some cartridges. Tend to stay away from them. For handgun cartridges, I just load them with everything else.
Yoda, your test loads fit with what I found with 7977 and the 25-06. Scotty's advice on seating depth might just be the ticket for pulling that one off shot.
both of my 25-06's are 22" barrels. Using the accubond a .1 off the lands in one and .75 in the other I'm seeing right at 3200 down to...
I have 2 25-06's Both shoot lights out (even though I'm chasing the lands on one). I've taken whitetail over 500 yards with them twice and one over 600.
Saying that, I picked up a 'rescue' Win Mod 70 and rebarreled it to a 6.5x55. Really liking that rifle. As others have said, available bullets...
Took this one the 2nd week of the season. The day before was 22 degrees and 35 mph winds gusting to 50 with some freezing rain and a few flakes of snow. That morning it had warmed up to to 35 degrees and a 15 mph wind.
Took him at about 50 yards.
My pup stayed in the truck and slept. She...
I started in college. Those 16 ga shells at $5.99/ box were expensive to a college kid! Then I got a 12 ga and started on those. Then the 25-06, because I could load a more accurate round and it allowed me to shoot my rifle more often - improving my shooting skills. It grew from that.
I also...
There are a few higher BC .257 bullets out there. Probably would take a faster twist than the standard 1:10 though.

I believe Matrix still makes one, just have to email and ask.

I have one Legend Ultra HD on a Vanguard 243. For under $200 that I paid for it, it has been a good performer. I've used it out to 800 yards for giggles but, it seems about 500 is as far as the stadia marks will work somewhat accurately.
One of my uncles had a couple of Newton Rifles. Mauser actions but with an interrupted thread instead of the double-lug bolt on most mausers. Double-set trigger that's a hair's breath to go off when set. One was a 256 Newton made in Buffalo the other was a 22 Newton if I remember correctly...
