Like Blkram, I too have worked in the industry selling firearms and scopes etc. Having used a wide variety of cartridges and platforms helps sell.
My current choices/preferences are:
fox/coyote and the like: Tikka T3 223; Weatherby Vanguard 243 for longer shots
Deer/antelope/axis and the like...
My first scope to go bad was an old Leupold Vari-X III. If I could get the crosshairs to move, they wouldn't stay put. So, off it went to the factory. They replaced it and I sold it when I sold the rifle it was on some 10 years later. Gradually, over time, I moved away from Leupolds to other...
I'd second the call to jump the bullets some. In every cartridge I use the AB's in, they seem to prefer .05-.1" of jump for best accuracy. I'd suggest re-doing the ladder starting at .05" off the lands.
I'm running 7977 in both of my 25-06's pushing the 110 gr AB out of near-worn out factory 22" barrels. Speed is good - 3200 fps in one and 3150 in the other (.5 gr difference in loads). Accuracy has been very good and I don't notice a lot of change due to temps (40-105f). Main thing I've seen is...
Let's see...
2 - 223/5.56 one semi-auto, one bolt gun
2 - 25-06 one is a first-year production 700 ADL that I re-stocked in maple, gave it to my Dad when he complained his 30-06 kicked too much to enjoy shooting it. I got it back after he passed (and I'd give it up in a second just to have a...
The one 'glaring' (if you can call it that) hole in your caliber list is 6.5/264/256. I'd vote this way:
#1 Swede - accurate, light-recoil, death on critters from ground rats to moose not to mention steel and paper.
#2 256 Newton - can be pushed up to 3000 fps in the right combination which...
I've been running IMR4350 in both 30-06 and 243 with great results. With the temperature swings here in Texas, I haven't noticed any great changes in results other than groups opening up a bit but still under 1 MOA.
I started at 56 grains and worked up to 61. Started getting some swipes at 61 and the groups opened up.
One rifle likes 58.5 and one likes 59. Using BR2 primers and Hornady brass.
I'm currently running 7977 in two of my 25-06's pushing the 110 AB. Both are with 22" barrels. Velocities in both are in the 3175-3250 range and accuracy is superb. Taking them out to 400 yards, drops are consistent and groups hold their .5 or so groups out to that range.
No pressure signs...
First purchased the Sig 850 to replace my Leica 1000. The 4x optics were clear but just not enough X for me. It ranged well, spotting an elk @ 700 yards and hard, reflective objects beyond the 850 (furthest was a sign @ 975 or so.
Sold it to a friend and purchased the 1250 version. I haven't...
BC can change based upon velocity. If my load with them in my 264 is 3200 and your load is 3500, you'll have a different (probably higher) BC than I do. Also, altitude can have an effect as well.
any of the 4350's or 4831. When I shot the 100's all I used was the IMR4831. Never chronographed the loads though I would get 5 shot groups around .4-.5 with a Speer BTSP.
SJB358,
I was just up in NOVA right after T-giving. From the number of road kills on the highways, someone needs to do some shooting! ;) The swede and 264 seem to be the perfect combination to help keep the 'crowd' down!
Red Stag in either NZ or Scotland. Moose anywhere. My true fantasy hunt would be to spend the entire fall seasons - September -December, chasing elk in every state, including Kentucky and here in Texas.
I've had good luck with Accubonds in several calibers - 243, 25-06, 6.5x55 and 264 WM just to name a few.
Took a nice 5x5 elk this fall with the 142 LRAB. First shot passed through both shoulders:
2nd shot went through the ham and pelvis and ended up in the meat of the opposite shoulder...
