I bought 2 bags of Winchester 308 brass this last year, and it was somewhat poor. The good news on my last bag, they put 52 pieces in there. So I could discard a couple that were really bad. They used to be at least decent.
I'm using Nosler brass for my 280ack and 300 winnie. They are good...
I started out with the 180's, they were just fine. I ended up switching to the 200 grain Partitions, and they actually shot a bit better. I think I may try the 200 grain AB next.
Last year I played with the 220 grain Partitions. Just using plain old IMR 4350 (using Nosler load data), and was...
Thanks for the report! I kind of overbought on 168 grain Bergers (think I have like 250 left), and still can't get those things to shoot. I think I will get there, but seating depth is an issue for me.
I've also heard about fragmenting issues with the Bergers. Really that's what they are...
Thanks! It's at $799, and I did go for it.
For some reason, Cabelas always gets these deals from Leopold earlier then other retailers. But this happens every holiday season, soon the other Leopold dealers will have the same special. I think Cabelas just worked something out with Leopold to...
Cabalas is running a deal on the Leopold VX6 2-12. It's the one with Zero Lock, and duplex.
I have an elk cow tag that starts this January, and I'm already dialed in with my VX3 3.5-10. I think I'll stay with that for this hunting season.
Anyway, the VX3 will go on a rifle that currently has...
Wow! Those are some impressive numbers. (y) Are you having to run compressed loads (only ask because I can't go there with my Redding comp seating die)?
My and my 280ai are still pushing the 168's. Haven't graduated to the 175/180 class
Wow, sorry I had been gone for a while and didn't realize I said something so technically incorrect (not sure what that was though). But I apologize for anything that is not correct.
I'll try to limit my responses next time.
Yep, you can use the data interchangeably. I'd treat it no different then just changing lot #'s of the same powder.
Maybe the extreme limit, where the H4831 is compressed, and the SC is not... maybe there would be a pressure difference at that point. Otherwise, if you find data for one, you...
Ok, fair enough. Looks pretty negligible between the 120 and 168. Probably like every other ballistics debate, not much of it really matters when you lay those cross hairs on that elk and the animal drops either way.
cheers.
I'm wanting to go the other way. I'm loading my 280ai with 168 grain Barns LRX and getting 2900 fps.
A lighter bullet would fade too quickly past a few hundred yards. Yea, most big game is taken within a couple hundred yards... but I still want the higher ballistic coefficient bullets. I...
I'm still trying to solve the Berger puzzle. They have a secant ogive, which makes them very particular to seating depth. I had to give up on the 168 Berger VLD Hunting for this year since hunting season is here, and I needed to settle on a load.
The 160 grain NAB should be a lot more...
Mine does well with H4831sc, although I'd like to try RL 26 sometime.
Interestingly enough, I played with 220 grain Partitions in my 300 winnie, and did better then 2700 fps with good ole IMR 4350. And the most accurate 100 yard groups of any bullet wt and load I tried out of that rifle.
I did a lot of shooting with RL22 and the 130 grain BT. That did very well. When I switched to the 140 AB, I ended up using H4831sc. It just shot so well, I never experimented beyond that.
I'm sure RL22 would do well with the 140's though.
I'm fairly new to the 280ai, I just finished my semi custom last fall.
The funny thing about the 280 Ack is there is no "one thing" that makes it stand out above the sea of comparable cartridges. But it's all the little things, where if you add them up (at least for me) it really makes a sweet...
This is a repeat. This time a five shot group, 3 went into the same hole at the bottom. I did 3 sets of 5, but interestingly the other two groups at 58.5 grains RL26 didn't turn out that well.
I'm starting to think I need to slow down and work on my fundamental shooting skills. This one...
I was seeing some marks at 60 grains RL26 with the 168 grain Berger VLD. That was on a 94 degree day though. Not all pieces of brass, just a few.
Generally, I think no good comes of a range day when temperatures are above 90F
Well, as luck would have it, I left my chrono battery on since last month and it was completely dead when I showed up at the range. Anyway, I shot 3 groups of 3. 58, 58.5, 59 grains RL26. Notice anything funny about the upper right group (58.5)? I'm pretty sure I totally 'Robinhood'ed" all 3...
For me, H4831sc was a bit tighter, but RL22 was a bit faster with 200 grain PT. Thats in a Ruger M77 Mark II.
By the way, I played with the 220 grain Partitions, and got above 2700 fps with plain old IMR 4350. And I got great accuracy for a factory rifle (0.5 - 0.7 moa).
300 winnie is just...
I couldn't find the specs on Weatherby website. What twist does that bad boy barrel have? I'd probably be thinking of the heavier 140 - 142 range, but that's just me.
It's going to shoot like a lightning bolt either way. 8)
