    280 Ack Imp QL Request

I also ran some 168 grain Berger VLD hunting over 60.0 grains rl 26. I was at 2920 fps but it was 92 degrees out. I'm still having issues with fliers. I'm starting to lose faith in rl 26. Good speed, but I'm not seeing the accuracy I'd like. I do have some rl22, imr7828ssc, h4831sc.

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

57 grains rl26 with the 168 grain Barns LRX gave me 2770 fps at a bit over 1 moa. Definitely nothing to write home about, but it's just a data point. 58 grains gave me 2820 fps, but the group really opened up. But no pressure signs.

ithaca model 37 ultra featherlight 20 gauge

Thanks guys! I believe it does have an aluminum receiver. The action is very smooth, and it's just a sweet little gun. Slight issue… I bought some 2 1/2 " target loads, loaded it. It holds 5 rounds, but I believe here in Oregon you can only have a shotgun that holds 3 for hunting. Still...

ithaca model 37 ultra featherlight 20 gauge

Anyone know anything about these things? My (very kind) sister-in-law gave me this little gun. She has small kids, and wasn't really into firearms. I traced the SN to a build date of 1978. It looks great, with only a few wear marks on the blueing. I think it has an integral modified choke, but...

    Working with new powders

You can try finding a similar bullet with known load data. For example, if you have data for a 168 grain Berger VLD with the powder you want. You'd probably be pretty close for the 168 grain ABLR. Or Hornady V-Max data for Nosler Ballistic. But NOT Hornady Round nose as a substitute for...

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the information about Nosler offerings. I use Nos bullets in many of my rifles. This particular one however, I want to try and come up a load for the 168 LRX. Barns did provide me some data directly via email, but nothing for RL26. They did have some for...

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

That is an awesome group! Truth is there is nothing I am going to be hunting that couldn't be taken with a 150 grn etip. Cow elk this year, which wouldn't be a problem. I'm more experimenting at this point with some higher BC mono bullets. It may turn out that I have to give up too much...

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

It's a 1:8 twist. I should be able to stabilize it, I'm just not sure it will leave enough room in the case to push it very hard.

    280 Ack Imp QL Request

If someone has some free time, and would be so kind, could you please run some numbers for me? SAAMI 280 Ack Imp 24" barrel O.A.L. 3.420" Nosler brass, 66.806 grain H2O Reloader 26 Barns 168 grain LRX These bullets are just HUGE, and I'm a bit skeptical about using them. Thanks for your...

    Deforming bullet tips

Hm, I don't quite follow what's going on. Was it compressed with the 4227, and switching to H110 helped? I load 300 grain Hornady XTP over 20.0 grains of H110. Shoot mine out of a Ruger Super Redhawk 7.5" I like shooting the big heavy bullets, maybe I should give the Noslers a try too...

    Twisting it right...

I guess I had a hard time understanding your theses. Was it that over stabilization does exist? If that was your point, you kind of discounted it by highlighting you would have to be in these "out of boundary" conditions, like super fast twist (1:4 or 1:5 maybe) that no one would use. Or...

    Custom 28 Nosler being ordered....

I might consider a 1:8 or 1:8.5 twist on that barrel. That would keep the door open if you wanted to try some of the really high BC bullets out there. I went with the 1:8 twist on my 280 Ack, but more because I wanted to try the 168 grn Barns LRX (in case the state of Oregon ever decides to go...

    Ruger 77/44

Sometimes at the range I shoot my Ruger Super Redhawk 7.5" 44 while my rifles are cooling off. Mainly just for fun, and just shooting free-hand. But even with 300 grain bullets (w/ 20.0 grns H110 @ 1325 fps), you be surprisingly accurate out at 100 yards. I'll bet that little rifle would...

    Scope power ?

I think that illustrates the point a couple guys have made. Pick the magnification that works for what you are doing. 3-9 or 4-12 isn't really going to make that much of a difference, and both are suited for either a 7mm RM or a 243. Scopes can really be a "rabbit hole." There is always room...

    Scope power ?

My 280 Ack has a 3.5-10 VX3. I think it handles great as a hunting rifle for mostly Western Oregon. Meaning mostly timber, with some timber land clear cuts giving possibility of somewhat longer ranges. My 223 bold gun has a 4-12 VX2, which I use mainly as a target rifle, but it also doubles...

    Nosler 28

The 28 is definitely very interesting. What do you plan on loading? I'd look at the 175 grn ABLR, 175 Hornady EDL-X, or maybe the 180 grn Berger VLD. My wimpy little 280 Ack is going with the 168 grain bullets.

    Chasing hunting rifle accuracy

Yeah, everyone likes new rifles. But would it help you put meat on the table? No… in my opinion (and I am absolutely no expert), you would be better off spending your money on components and shooting more. You'd spend a lot of money trying to squeeze out another 1/4 MOA or so...

    35 Newton RL26 250 PTs

isaac newton himself would be intrigued with the energy that thing generates. very cool. (y) And nice speed, pushing those 250 grainers…
