I'm a little late to this party, but the recent forest fires have done quite a number on many of the hunting spots I've frequented over the last few years in the Sawtooths. Things have gotten worse as flash floods have decimated many of the access roads. As to McCall... never hunted up that...
I don't know how much of what he said was true, but I can say I've witnessed the powder flying from the shelves. At the Sportsman's Warehouse by me, customers had a choice on shipment days... either get in line at customer service for ammo (22lr, 223, 9mm, 45 mainly) or head for the reloading...
My rifles have no names. I have one pistol that got a name somehow... a little Ruger SR9c that was dubbed "My Little Friend." Then I have one shotgun that has received a name... a 10ga Browning BPS named Thumper. It tends to do the work of its moniker from both ends!
Vince mentioned some recoil reducing measures. That is a great option. My higher horsepower rifles and high use shotguns wear Limbsavers and they flat out work. I have no experience with the recoil reducers like the Graco he mentioned or Dead Mule but have heard good things... and speaking of...
She makes me sick.... and the residents of my home state vote for that waste of flesh election after election after election. I guess that's why some places are "good to be from" and not just "good to be."
You are correct, however, I'm only in half agreement with you on the fruitless symbolic gesture part... symbolic... yes, but I disagree on fruitless. Politicians like being in power. It sends a message. I'm certainly not saying it is a permanent end to attempts at gun control, but it does send...
The last few weeks, primers have been showing up in force. No shortage there at all. Bullets are back at normal levels. Powder is slowly coming back.... very slowly.
Ajvigs had mentioned, if I'm not mistaken, ammo availability and costs as reason for ditching the 7WSM. In the .30 and under rifles in my safe, I think my 7WSM is right at the top of the list of favorites... but like Ajvigs, I'd be unhappy with it if I were buying ammo... but fortunately I...

Figured I'd toss this calculator on here so one can play with different bullet weights and speeds and see some of the differences beyond just velocity.
Don't know if I'd call it a bucket list, but the items on my short list right now...
-AR-10 or DPMS platform 308
-Big bore lever... preferably 444Marlin
-XDs or Glock 36 or similar
-Ruger Redhawk 44 mag
-Decent O/U preferably 20ga...an english stock would be a plus
-Mark V in 257
-22LR...
True and true! Charlie, at 6'5" and tickling 275, I feel a lot of recoil! LOL! When at a bench, I am usually hunkered over a bit, causing me to lean forward into the gun which has the potential to be miserable after a while. I only shoot like that if I'm going for a group. I much prefer a stool...
Just to add to the little guy vs big guy thought... Elmer Keith was not a big guy by any stretch of the imagination and he shot stuff that'd make me pee myself... and I don't much mind magnums at all. His theory in "Hell,I Was There"... assuming my memory serves me correctly, was bigger framed...
...just did a bit of google ninja work to make sure I was correct, but energy does not increase lineal to velocity. A 10% gain in velocity will yield much more than a 10% gain in energy. Add heavier bullets with even great differences in velocity into the mix and
It has already been touched on, but I tend to be a fan of heavier bullets... an area where I feel the magnums shine. I have a 308, 300WM and 300Roy. Comparing the Roy to the 308 is a bit unfair, but look at 30-06 data as compared to a 300Roy or WinMag in 200 and 220 grain bullets. A quick...
Not sure I'd be too concerned. A 300gr AB ought to be phenomenal. So far the only 300 grainers I've put through my 375 Ruger are the PTs... and they weren't used on big mean critters... just mean paper and water jugs.
