    New .224 ideas!

Wondering from those who do this, how is a fast twist overbored .224 on barrel life? Shooting a sedate velocity 5.56 with the same bullets and twist rates, we generally get in the 4-5000 round range before accuracy begins to degrade with service and match rifles. I could see the usefulness for...

    Cabin Fever Challenge

Sounds like a good excuse to get an M1 carbine and a Swiss K-31

    Cabin Fever Challenge

I'm going to do this. Looks like a good friendly competition and test of field marksmanship skills. Wish my M99 had a stripper clip guide, that would be fun. Will have to shoot the K-31 for manual unlimited.

    How hunting has changed.

I've noticed this where I hunt too. Nobody walks around and moves them anymore like they used to seems to be the biggest difference. A lot of old guys that own land are retired now, and don't hunt until mid-week, usually out their window. Just don't get the deer movement like we used to.

.310 Barnes 108 gr RRLP Frags

Found a box of these I forgot about in the loading room. Originally got them for a "safety bullet" to use in my barn gun when we had a coyote problem as the area is somewhat populated and I didn't want to go slinging solidly built rifle bullets about the landscape. Loaded them up to shoot a...

    Europe

I have my eye on Greenland Musk Ox and Caribou, as well as (forget if it was CZ or Slovakia) deer and boar. Both hunts were blue collar affordable for a "once in a lifetime" experience once travel and such was figured into the cost. Need to check a couple off the North America list first.

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

I fired some of this ammo in my Greek M1903 that somebody had shortened and made into a sporting rifle. It had a bit of a flattened point on the RN that didn't like to feed in my rifle without a little help. A thin coat of wax just on the exposed tip solved my problem. Hornady RN and 140 spitz...

    Off center flash holes

Just bent another RCBS decapping pin  . Seem to be having a rash of these in the last 2 years, one was even a Nosler case (yes, they made it right). Anybody know a good method to weed out off-center holes prior to resizing/ decapping? Was previously reloaded brass, ran fine though my old...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

When I loaded the cartridge, I used IMR 4350 with Hornady data in both the 140 and 160 weight. Accuracy was excellent, and I wouldn't call the loads "mild," rather appropriate for the pressures of the cartridge. Never did take any game, but I'm sure they would have worked well on deer-antelope...

Not happy with 2018 Deer Season

We've had 2 in a row with the first winter type temperatures and high winds falling in the beginning of rifle season and hanging on for the duration. Kind of holes up the deer in tight cover and puts a damper on the rut activity. You are not alone. Tag soup here last November

    Manual Powder Beam Scales

I have a Dillon, forget the model number. It is accurate and repeatable. I DO NOT TRUST DIGITAL. My house is weird, and has some strange non-repeatable and random deflections that interfere with them. I do have some .22 caliber bullets, a silver dime and copper penny, weight confirmed and...

    Target bullets for deer

Last winter I did some contract management work with an acquaintance in WI using a 75gr Hornady HPBT. 27 deer taken, mostly does and fawns on head and high neck shots to 100+/- yards. ALL wounds exhibited violent expansion and fragmentation as I would expect. Also did some night work with...

    Hunting Rifle Zero's and practice

I used to zero my rifle at an aprox. 200 yard zero. An even 2" high at 100 came out to just a tick high or low at 200 with most of the loads I used. Wasn't really concerned about zero past 230 yards as that was my maximum hunting range where I hunt. Rifle is a .280 Rem on a Mauser action, and...

Oops...Important to keep your eye on the ball!

I've played with H110 slightly undercharged for silhouette loads in my .41 mag. I think the worst results you might get from your below start loads would be dirty burning and lackluster performance if you use them up for some practice shooting.

    Military Cartridges

There's a reason the old battle rifle rounds are so popular. A lot of engineering and testing went into the cartridges and the rifles designed for them. In the time where 1000+ yard capability was deemed necessary in an infantry rifle, the resulting cartridges were flat shooting and...

    Dog Killed

So sorry to hear about this. Somebody who could hit a dog could hit a person. I gave up a short and promising career in waterfowl guiding due to this. My dog wasn't shot badly, 2 pellets in the neck scruff. I was tempted to make the guy walk to shore. As it was, I relieved him of his...

What a surprise with my 7MM-08

A lot of the new powders are all the rage, but the old IMRs will still get it done. IMR 4350 is the most accurate I have found in 6.5x55, .280Rem and 30-06 180 grain. It just gets it done, but likes to run on the warm side of the curve.

    Berry's plated bullets

I've run them in my .41 mag. They were very accurate, and I was able to run them to around 1200FPS. This was the ceiling, any higher and I got significant leading.

    successful hunts/rifle preference types/Larysa

1: It is frustrating as hell to see all these successful hunts. I have time off for one a year, locally. Seriously, congrats to all the successful hunters, I will live vicariously until I retire. 2: I hunt with wood and blue (except waterfowl). The wood is lovingly sanded and oiled by...

    Not Nosler

When did Speer quit making the GS dual alloy? There is also still a difference in the profiles. The Mag tip is more blunt, which I really like at woods ranges. They just seem to be the perfect deer bullet for my applications, opening rapidly the first several inches of penetration, then...
