The most important point in the Protected point is that if you are cursed with a minimal magazine length with a long free bore rifle such as kimber Montanas you can use the protected point's over all length to get the bullet closer to the lands for much better accuracy.
I've been using the 300 gr Accubonds in my 338 RUM and I took a cow elk with a texas heart shot at 360 yds. She did go about 150 yds before piling up. Love those Accubonds (y)
The 165 gr. Accubond using 75 grs. of Hodgdon Superformance and CCI 250 primers with an overall length of 2.895 gave me .53" at 3275 fps. It kills white tails fast.
The 240 Wby. loads that worked out for my Vanguard S2 was the (always my favorite) 90 gr. Accubond. I used 56 gr. of H4831sc . I checked the free bore and found it to be 3.365 to the lands so to get the "awesome" accuracy it delivered I went to a cartridge over all length of 3.306 which fits...
That will make a nice build. My 7mm RUM with 168gr. AB/LR bullets clocks 3355 fps out of my Rem 700. At 8 lbs 4 oz including the Bushnell 4200 6-24x40 . I'll stay with it for now but if a Nosler 36 or 42 comes out "sign me up" (y)
Your choice of scope model is perfect. You can order the shims and set it up for zero stop and it'll stand next to nightforce. We've never had one come back to Cabela's in Missoula. At the time I set a Monarch 5-20 on my 30-378 with BDC but Vortex wasn't an option then.
Scottty,
I just finished working up loads for the 190 gr. NAB L/R in a new 300 Wby. Vanguard. The best powder I found was IMR7828. I know you're using the 210 gr. bullet so my loads won't help but I found that the Vanguard's magazine length limited me to 3.580 and it shot OK but not as accurate...
The best caliber for medium game up to elk is easy, it's the one you're carrying when the animal steps out into the opening. I'd prefer the 280 with a 160 gr. Accubond at 2950 fps per Nosler #1 reloading manual. It's very accurate and doesn't kick the bejeebers out me.
The hard part is getting...
My 300 Wby with 190 ABLR at 3120fps carries 2340 fpe to 600 yds. With a 180 gr accubond at 3145 fps it carries 1923 fpe to 600 yds. My 338 Wm with 225 gr ABs at 2960 fps carry 2214 fpe to 600 yds.
I agree the larger heavier bullet of the 338 is the way to go for large game even with the benefit...
My Tikka T3 Lite S/S loves the 165 gr. Accubonds. The most accurate rifle I've owned using this load.
CCI 250 primers. W/W brass 2.895 OAL 75 grs of Hodgdon Superformance. My chrono shows 3275 FPS
It clover leafed 5 shots at 100 yds. The Superformance load from Hodgdon's Annual Manual...
I've just finished working up the 168 ABLR loads for my 7mm RUM. and I like what I see. Accuracy, after dealing with a mount problem, was equal to the 160 A/B at about 2.5" at 300 yds. I didn't retrieve the target (DEEP SNOW). I ended up with 91 gr of RL25 and 3355 fps with Fed 215 primers. I...
