Hmmm! By classic I think most used. That would be 30-30 or 30-06 I believe. The 30-30 Win 94 is the single most owned rifle so I guess that would be it. If it was post WWII I would say 30-06 and my choice would be Winchester model 70 in 30-06. I've never owned a 30-06 but it is the all around...
Those branches usualy only jump up and kiss the arrow when the Big one is there. Sounds like you're on a mission for the bruiser bucks. Good Luck Jim.

I used the Accubond in the 257 Wby but I havn't tried it in the 25-06. Based on Fotis's experience I believe I'll give it a try. I'd also like to try some of the 115/117 gr bullets. I'm hoping a 12o or 125 Accubond is on the horizon.

You're right you live in some of the most beautiful country on earth, thanks for sharing the visual grandeur. Fall in all it's panoramic colors is very inspiring and I wish I was there.
The blame for the crummy results rests soley with my crummy shot. The 25-06 knocked the deer down handily. There's a combination of things that I've become a believer in. A slower expanding bullet in a big enough caliber to give me the retained weight I want to use on the animal in a big enough...
The trip is over and the mule deer is history but the 25-06 debate lives on. From the deer's standpoint it worked but required a lot of hobbling around before he was put out of his misery. The shop placement wasn't the best for sure. At 300+ yards downhill I was hoping for the shoulder but the...
Well after 2 days of persuing the elusive wapati I found them. After many prayers and hiking I discovered them on the hillside and meadow across from my cabin (on private land of course) I watched 41 elk of all types come down to the river at dusk. A nice 6x6 herd bull a couple of rag hornes and...
Despite my reservations about non-magnum calibers the 25-06 done good. At 304 yds it dumped a 3 point mule deer on it's butt. Unfortunately the shooter hit the quartering away buck in the hips so a search ensued. It ended well (except for the deer) with a finishing shot. Nosler's reputation is...
The idea of talking about the sharing before the hunt seems to work the best. I have had problems when I was new to hunting because we didn't know to decide things before there was a problem. I don't think it's a fault or blame issue. We were all raised with what was acceptable in our hunting...
I used the 280 last year for elk and mule deer but never got a shot. Could be a re-run of that but I have more time to hunt this year so I'm thinking I'll at least get a mule or whitetail. I'm crutching on the 338 RUM and experimenting on the others. The 280 by the way has 160 Nosler A/Bs at...
My di is cast. 338 RUM for elk and 25-06 for mule deer. OK, so I whimped out and am taking the 280 Rem also. But it's only in case of emergencies. It's been a real learning experience for this die-hard magnum hunter.
Thanks everyone
After a lot of waffling I decided to take the 25-06 as the mule deer rifle to accompany the 338 RUM for elk. I have to admit I haven't got the warm fuzzy feeling yet with quarter bores. Mostly because I've never used them on anything but antelope, and that was a 257 WBY. I see a lot of pictures...
