I use a Wichita front rest and rabbitear bag rear sandbag. I used the same rig when I shot benchrest, but I wore out the bags and am on the second set now. I use the pattern maker heavy sand from Sinclair to fill them.
Once you learn bench technique, I don't think you need a machine rest. I do...
I have been using the Leupold 12-40X60 HD and the Pentax PF 65 ED for hunting. I also tried out a Minox 62 mm spotter. You have to really go up in price to beat these scopes.
CameralandNY is also running a special on an 80mm Vortex spotter at the $200 price point...
I have been studying hunting optics for some years, and doing a bit of writing about it. I have used scopes from ridiculously expensive to cheap, and lately I have concentrated on scopes that are good enough and well-supported by the factory.
You are not going to go wrong with Leupold, and no...
My current light but accurate champion is my NULA .30-'06.
I also have a R#1B in 6mm Rem that is very accurate, but weighs more than I consider light. I have a couple of custom rifles based on Rem actions that shoot too (6.5-'06 and .280 Rem).

Corey,
I often hunt with a NULA M24 .30-'06, and this year I am going to put a Leupold VX3 2.5-8X on it with the NULA lightweight rings (Talley). Previously I had a Leupold XVIII 3.5-10X and a Swaro AV 3.5-10X. I like the Leupold scopes because their product support is second to none. The glass...
Can you hunt with iron sights? That would be as light as you can get.
Otherwise Leupold is your best best, I use their variables and stay under 12 oz for scope and rings (Talley lightweights). If you go with a fixed power scope, that would be lightest.

Nice rifle, and an excellent buck.
I saw a real monster on a farm north and east of Stettler in November. Unfortunately he was on the farm we didn't have permission to hunt. I want to return and hunt Alberta again.

Since I first posted in this thread I have continued to look for comparisons in these rifles. It looks to me after additional study that they share a common Finnish ancestry from Sako.
Also you can license designs and produce them yourself (or by a third party of your choice). I expect that...
My .300 RCM M77 Hawkeye has a 20" barrel, I didn't know they had gone shorter. I expect to use my rifle in the fall of 2009 for deer and whatever. ;)

barge,
I have the CED Millenium original unit with the IR screens. For your ML application you may have to adjust the distance to the screens or shoot through a sheet of paper.

I would definitely recommend the .270 because there are tons of rifle choice options available, and the 7X57 is barely in the market. I also recommend letting her choose the rifle she likes best.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and the ball cap
I have applied for the Montana draw and hope to parlay that into a trophy mule deer hunt (if I can draw the area I want). Same for Colorado. Either draw or get a bonus point (MT) or preference point (CO).
Then I will motor up to Oregon and try for blacktail again.
I will be using my Ruger M77...
Some states require the open ignition to hunt their ML seasons, for example Oregon. Where will you be hunting with a ML? I have more than one ML rifle so I can make "legal" in that state.
I shoot both #11 percussion caps and 209 shotgun primers in different rifles, although my White UltraMag...
