Modifying cartridge OAL - Which seating die is best?

Without doubt the Wilson seating die yields least run out when bullet seating, but requires an arbor press. Not too expensive, but does work. You have to be sure your case neck/case body run out is low too for consistently low run out on the finished cartridge, so your sizing die needs to be set...

How to find starting powder charge for unlisted powder?

Mainly, a lighter weight bullet will develop to a somewhat larger propellant chargeweight than a heavier bullet. So, the start weight charge fot the 200gn bullet will easily also accomodate your 180gn bullet. Cheers.

Thinking about a new press, How much of one do I need?

Absolutely DrMike, all the decent presses will indeed virtually last for ever. In fact apart from Lee presses which do the job, but break easier than the rest, I’ve never ever come across any press being worn out. They will all make decent ammunition but it’s always the operator that decides how...

    6.5x55

Ha yes, I definitely should. Next weekend I’m off to Scotland looking for a roe buck, so I’ll take it with me. It does shoot so well and ok to carry. (y) Pic attached.

    6.5x55

I have a Steyr Mannlicher Classic stutzen in 6.5x55 SE and been doing some testing since I bought it last year. Currently I have regular 1/2"-3/4" groups at the range with the load I use. That's using a rest of course, but it makes me smile. I'm using the Hornady 123gn SST bullet and...

Thinking about a new press, How much of one do I need?

Nice presses Guy, I really like that Hart arbor press and the Lyman turret press looks really cool too.. I'm still using my 30 year old Rockchukker (Works perfectly) for everything except some specific bullet seating that I use my Harrell (Basic but works fine) arbor press for.

    Corroded Accubonds

I experienced the same issue across three boxes of 110gn .257 AB’s around two years ago. I contacted Nosler about the problem & gave them the box serial numbers. They told me they’d been made around four years earlier. There wasn’t any corrosion, just broken tips...approx 15% of each box .... I...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

I have scoped my MSch Takedown using Ziegler & Recknagel ‘QD claw mount’ bases and rings to fit a Schmidt & Bender 8x56 scope, 30mm tube. For those interested, I'll attach a few pics here so you see how it's been done. Hopefully it makes sense. Anyway, This year I’m going to get similar mounts &...

I’m a bit puzzled by the thinking the full stock on an old MSch would shift the zero. Yup, I know it’s wood. Yup, I know humidity can affect wood. But not the wood that’s so old and well seasoned like that used from 1903 to 1950’s manufactured stutzens. That wood is so good, old and stable, it...

Sounds like an excellent hunting trip for your granddaughter Europe & two rifles is always better than one. 7mm08 is a good cartridge too. It would be nice to know which part of Africa the hunt is booked in. But wherever, it definitely sounds a good trip. Africa is magical, especially Kenya...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

Yup, definitely Buddy, Not too much MV with these old MSch stutzens, the bullet doesn’t need it, but good solid strikes that really do the biz. Breaks shoulder bones, does lots of internal damage and drops them on the spot. Close’ish range yup, but hey there’s nothing wrong with that. Getting in...

    6.5 x 54 m.S.

Ha Scotty, well remembered. Yup DW Karamojo Bell certainly specialised on shooting elephants with a 6.5 ... lots of them! And by the way, my little stutzen is a shooter despite its age (y) haven’t scoped it yet though. That’s next years project. Still, it’s knocked over quite a few feral goats...

Just one other thing if you’re reloading 6.5x54MSch. .. .. most modern seating dies have seating plug that accomodate pointy bullets. If you’re using the 160gn RN bullet, you need an appropriately shaped seating plug. The pointy ones really don’t help when seating RN bullets. Obvious I know, but...

    Off center flash holes

If it helps, it’s a pleasure. I’m not sure whose dies are helped by the centering method, but certainly RCBS & Hornady dies allow it. I’ve never had the same issue with Redding dies but they’re a slightly different screw in assembly though some thous of an inch of movement are available if...

    Off center flash holes

It's a real pain when that happens. But, here's a thought .... Was your RCBS decapping rod centered properly in the die? It's a simple process to do this correctly. The method is: With the die in your press, Slacken the decap rod nut, so the rod is slightly loose. Run a lubed case into the...

Hi Europe, I have two MSch M1903 rifles in 6,5x54. One a 1922 manufacture ‘Takedown’ currently being re-barreled in the same calibre/certridge & the other a 1936 manufactured ‘Stutzen’. I have used both on red deer and feral goat in Scotland, also I have used both 140gn and 160gn bullets in both...
